Future Fins John John 2 Alpha Thruster Set

The Future Fins John John 2 Alpha Thruster Fin Set is a three-fin thruster setup co-designed with one of surfing's most decorated competitors. It channels the performance requirements of high-level competitive surfing into a fin that rewards committed turns, powerful rail surfing, and explosive releases in critical sections.

Alpha Construction

Future Fins built this set on their Alpha platform, a construction method born from the aerospace-grade fabrication expertise the Longo brothers brought to surfing when they founded the company in 1996. The Alpha layup uses fiberglass cloth in a controlled process that produces a blade with a lively, responsive flex pattern. The result is a fin that loads energy through a bottom turn and releases it cleanly off the top, without the dead feeling of a fully rigid fin or the unpredictability of something too soft.

The base of each fin is injection-molded with Futures' signature tab system, engineered for a snug, rattle-free fit in any standard Futures-compatible box. The blade construction visible on the fin includes horizontal reinforcement banding across the upper section, adding torsional control that keeps the tip from twisting under load during hard directional changes.

Thruster Performance

As a thruster configuration, the John John 2 Alpha set is suited for surfers who want a familiar, versatile feel across a range of wave conditions. The thruster setup provides a balanced combination of drive through the fins and pivot off the tail, making it a capable everyday choice as well as a competition-ready option. The fin template follows the type of moderate rake and upright stance that translates to quick pivoting in smaller surf while still holding in larger, more powerful conditions.

About Future Fins

Future Fins was founded in 1996 by the Longo brothers, who brought an aerospace fabrication background and hydrogen fuel cell engineering experience to the surf industry. That technical foundation is reflected in every fin they produce, from the material selection to the manufacturing tolerances that ensure consistent performance across sets.

Frequently Asked Questions
What fin box system are the Future Fins John John 2 Alpha fins compatible with?
The John John 2 Alpha thruster set uses the Futures fin box tab system and fits any surfboard with standard Futures-compatible fin boxes.
What is Alpha construction in Future Fins?
Alpha is Future Fins' fiberglass layup construction, developed from the aerospace fabrication background of the company's founders. It produces a fin with a lively flex response that loads energy through the turn and releases it cleanly, without being too stiff or too soft.
Is the John John 2 Alpha a good fin for competitive surfing?
Yes. The fin was developed with competitive surfing performance in mind, prioritizing drive through rail turns, pivoting response, and release in critical sections. It suits surfers who want a fin that performs under pressure across a range of wave types.
What wave conditions work best with a thruster fin setup?
Thruster setups are the most versatile configuration in surfing. They provide drive and hold for powerful, larger surf as well as the pivot and control needed in smaller, punchier waves, making them an effective all-round choice.
Can I buy the Future Fins John John 2 Alpha set in person?
Yes. The Future Fins John John 2 Alpha Thruster Fin Set is available in store and online at Island Water Sports in South Florida.
How do Future Fins attach to a surfboard?
Future Fins use a two-tab base that slides into and locks within the Futures fin box system. No tools are required for installation or removal, and the fit is designed to be secure with no play or rattling during surfing.
