Island Water Sports has been the go-to shop for South Florida surfers, skaters, and paddlers since 1978. The Deerfield Beach location is where it all started — opened by founder Kirk Cottrell and still family-owned and operated today.
We're a full-service surf and skate shop with one of the most experienced crews on the coast. Whether you need a board shaped for South Florida's beach break, gear for a flat-day paddle, or a skate setup for your kid, this is the place. We also run surf lessons, surf camp, and rentals out of this location year-round.
If you're on A1A and looking for the shop — we're actually on South Federal, about five minutes from the beach. Easy parking, no hassle.

Surfing in Deerfield Beach — Local Spots & Conditions
Deerfield is a beach break that works at most sizes and is one of the more forgiving spots on the Broward/Palm Beach county line. The pier is your landmark — south side tends to be the most consistent, especially on a northeast swell. Banks shift after storms, so the peak moves around, but there's almost always something rideable within walking distance of the pier.
Best surf is October through March when northeast ground swells push through with real period. Winter mornings before the onshore fills in can be genuinely good — don't sleep on it. Summer is mostly small windchop, which makes it ideal for beginners, paddling, and lessons, but not much else.
Mid tide is usually the sweet spot. Bring a board with volume — it's a beach break, and paddle power matters more here than performance outline. Not sure what to ride? Come in and we'll set you up.

We're at 111 S. Federal Hwy (US-1), Deerfield Beach, FL 33441 — about a mile west of the beach. Free parking lot on-site. If you're coming from the beach on Hillsboro Blvd, turn right on Federal, and we're on your left.
Do you offer surf lessons?
Yes — we run private and group surf lessons year-round out of the Deerfield Beach location. Lessons are for all ages and skill levels. Board, leash, and rash guard are included. Book online or call the shop.
Do you run a surf camp?
Yes. IWS Surf Camp runs during summer and school breaks in Deerfield Beach. It's one of the longest-running surf camp programs in South Florida. Spots fill fast — book early if you can.
Can I rent a surfboard or paddleboard?
Yes. We rent surfboards and SUPs at the Deerfield Beach location. Half-day and full-day options available. Great for visitors or anyone who wants to try a new shape before buying.
Do you carry skateboard gear?
We carry a full selection of skate gear, including completes, decks, trucks, wheels, and protective equipment. We also carry apparel brands like Vans and Volcom that cross over between surf and skate.
