Rainy Day / Flat day alternatives

Lets face it, we live in South Florida. It’s a harsh reality but its gonna be flat most the summer! Floridians also are used to a quick afternoon summer storm before the sun comes out for the rest of the day. In the event of bad weather, camp still goes on. However should there be thunder and lightning we take the kids off the beach immediately and seek shelter.

OTHER ACTIVITIES AT OUR DEERFIELD CAMP MAY  INCLUDE:

Fishing Trips to Sullivan Park

Field trips to Island Water Sports to learn about surfboards and how to put one together.

Pier Walks

Arts and crafts

Environmental & STEM Education in partnership with Surf Skate Science

Reviews

"This is the 2nd summer of my daughter doing this surf camp and it won’t be the last! She loves it! Even if the waves aren’t cooperating the instructors keep the campers having plenty of fun with beach games, wave mat, or tubing. The instructors really love the kids and have a ton of fun with them. My daughter is really getting the hang of surfing now. See ya next summer!"

-Michelle (Annapolis, Maryland)

"Zane had the best experience as a 1st time surf camper. The one-on-one interaction as each child tried their 1st wave was irreplaceable. But, the best part was watching how the counselors always addressed nonproductive behavior w/a quick & to the point talk ending w/a smile & high five!"

-Cynthia W

"Excellent camp for all ages. My 12 year old just finished a week with Island Camps...the counselors were attentive, fun and made sure many different activities were planned as well as surfing. The visit to Gumbo Limbo and tubing in the ocean were top of the list. Highly recommend!"

IS THERE A CERTAIN SUNSCREEN YOU RECOMMEND?

The best sunscreen you can pack for your child is a mineral-based, reef safe product. Sunscreen with zinc and a minimum SPF of 30 is recommended for the campers. Our favorites areRaw Elements, Safe Sea, Salt and Stone, Shade, Sun Bum, Surface, Vertra, or grab some Zinka for fun reef-safe colors.

ARE WETSUITS NEEDED?

For summer camp wetsuits are not needed, however for winter break and spring break camp campers may opt to bring their own. The temperature of the water in South Florida never dips below 71 degrees Fahrenheit (22 Celsius), but the air temperature can be cooler. If you think your camper will be more comfortable in a wetsuit, we recommend a wetsuit top or a spring suit. Click here for options.

WHAT IF THERE ARE NO WAVES?

Lets face it, we live in South Florida. It’s a harsh reality but its gonna be flat most the summer! Worry not my future shredders. we have a ton of fun and radical ways to make sure the fun never stops at surf camp. Some of our flat day activities include environmental education and adventures to the Deerfield Beach International Fishing Pier. Plus, Surf camp is located just on the inside of a protected coral reef so when there are no waves, we are able to paddle out and swim with sea life ranging from sea turtles to tropical fish.

WHAT IF THERE IS BAD WEATHER?

Safety is our top priority, but Floridians often experience an afternoon tropical storm before the sun comes out for the rest of the day.In the event of bad weather, camp still goes on. However should there be thunder and lightning we take the kids off the beach immediately and seek shelter. We will go to the pavilion for shelter in storms and help us to social distance our campers during snacks, lunch, and activities. We will do activities until the bad weather passes and it is safe to return to the beach. Plus...worry not my future shredders. we have a ton of fun and radical ways to make sure the fun never stops at surf camp.
