Channel Islands Goldie: The Barrel Machine Built for Heavy Water

The Channel Islands Goldie is not a do-everything shortboard. It is a purpose-built, barrel-hunting shortboard designed by Al Merrick to perform at its absolute best when the surf is steep, hollow, and unforgiving. Barron Mamiya rode it to victory at the 2024 Pipe Pro and again at the 2025 Pipe Pro, making it one of the most proven big-wave performance shortboards in current competitive surfing. That pedigree is baked into every curve and contour of this board.

Design: Outline, Rocker, and Bottom Contours

The Goldie carries a moderate-to-fuller outline through the chest and midsection, which is where Channel Islands concentrates thickness and volume to deliver serious paddle power. That forward volume is not padding, it is engineered float that gets you into critical, fast-moving barrel sections before the lip throws. The outline pulls in progressively through the tail into a refined, controlled rounded pin that locks the board into the face of the wave and gives you the rail engagement you need when a section pitches over your head.

The rocker profile is tuned for steep drops: enough entry rocker to keep the nose from catching on a late drop, yet controlled enough through the midsection that the board accelerates down the line and finds the pocket without stalling. The tail rocker is refined rather than exaggerated, keeping the board connected and predictable through the barrel rather than loose and unpredictable in heavy surf where you cannot afford the board to wash out.

Bottom contours run a subtle single concave through the midsection transitioning to a double concave toward the fin cluster. The single concave generates lift and directional drive as you come off the bottom, while the double concave releases water cleanly through the fins so the board responds immediately to foot pressure and edge changes inside the barrel.

Fin Configuration and Feel

The Goldie is set up as a thruster. Three fins working together provide the drive and hold that steep, powerful surf demands: the side fins generate speed and directional control through a line, and the center fin gives the board the pivot point and tail hold that keeps you locked in when a section throws hard. The thruster setup on the Goldie is not a casual choice, it is the configuration that competitive surfers have proven in some of the world's heaviest barrels.

Both fin-box configurations on this board are compatible with the standard fin systems used by the industry's leading fin brands, so you are not locked into a narrow selection when it comes to tuning your setup. Choose your fins based on the surf you are chasing and your preferred pivot-to-drive ratio.

Wave Range and Who This Board Is For

The Goldie is at its best from chest-high to well overhead, particularly when those waves are hollow, fast, and demanding. It is a step-up in the truest sense: Channel Islands recommends sizing it roughly two inches above the shortboard you ride daily. That extra length and forward volume give you the paddle advantage to get into critical surf early, while the refined tail and rocker keep it from feeling like a log once you are on the face.

This board suits experienced surfers who already have a quiver staple for average beach-break conditions and are looking for a dedicated step-up when the swell hits. If you surf fast-breaking reefs, point breaks with hollow sections, or powerful beach breaks when the banks are firing, the Goldie belongs in your quiver. It is not the right call for small, soft, or gutless surf where a higher-volume or more maneuverable shortboard will serve you better.

Intermediate surfers who are progressing into heavier surf and have the paddle fitness to match a performance shortboard's demands will also find the Goldie's added forward float helpful. Just understand that its design rewards commitment and decisive surfing, not tentative positioning.

Channel Islands Surfboards: The Standard for Rider-Driven Design

Channel Islands Surfboards is a privately held shaping operation founded by Al Merrick and driven, from the beginning, by the demands of the world's best surfers. The board designs you find in the CI lineup are not marketing exercises: they are the direct result of years of feedback loops between Al Merrick's shaping bay and the world's highest-performance surfers competing in the most demanding surf on earth. The Goldie is a direct product of that process, shaped around what Barron Mamiya needed to win at Pipeline.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Channel Islands Goldie good for barrel riding?
Yes. The Goldie was designed specifically for steep, hollow, and powerful surf. Its rocker, outline, and refined tail are tuned to perform in critical barrel conditions, and it has been proven at the highest level of competition at waves like Pipeline.
What size Channel Islands Goldie should I ride?
Channel Islands recommends sizing the Goldie roughly 2 inches above the shortboard you ride in everyday conditions. The extra length and forward volume give you the paddle power to get into fast, steep surf early. See the size chart on this page for exact dimensions at each length, and use the variant selector to see what we have.
What fins does the Channel Islands Goldie use?
The Goldie is a thruster setup. It is available with two different fin-box configurations, selectable in the variant picker on this page. Both are compatible with the major fin systems used by leading fin manufacturers.
How does the Channel Islands Goldie compare to an everyday shortboard?
The Goldie is a step-up, not an all-around board. It carries more volume forward and through the chest than a high-performance shortboard, which gives it noticeably better paddle power in larger, faster surf. It is built to excel in hollow, powerful conditions rather than small or average beach break.
Who is the Channel Islands Goldie designed for?
The Goldie suits experienced shortboarders looking for a dedicated step-up for powerful, hollow surf. Progressing intermediate surfers with solid paddle fitness can also benefit from the forward volume. It is not intended as a beginner board or an all-conditions everyday rider.
What wave types work best with the Channel Islands Goldie?
The Goldie excels in hollow, fast-breaking reef breaks, powerful beach breaks when the sand banks are right, and point breaks with hollow sections. It is at its best from chest-high to well overhead. In small, soft, or weak surf it will feel stiff and hard to maneuver.
Where can I see the Goldie's volume and dimensions for each size?
The complete dimensions and volume in liters for every size are in the size chart on this page. Use the variant selector to see which options are available to purchase.
