Al Merrick's Template. Ultralight AirCore Construction.
The FCS 2 AM PC Air Core Tri-Fin Set brings Al Merrick's proven shaper template into FCS's most advanced lightweight construction. Merrick's AM template was built for radical, progressive surfing, and the PC AirCore build strips excess weight without sacrificing stiffness, so the fins respond exactly as the design intends.
The AM Template: Speed, Drive, and Quick Release
The AM fin template is defined by its raked side fins. That rake angle generates exceptional speed down the line and locks in drive through powerful, drawn-out turns. The center fin on this template is sized to offer quick release through turns, letting the tail break free at the right moment for snappy, controlled direction changes. The geometry suits hollow, steep waves and punchy beach breaks where speed and precision matter most.
PC AirCore Construction
PC stands for Performance Core, FCS's updated construction that wraps the AirCore hollow interior in a performance-tuned outer shell. The result is a fin that is noticeably lighter than solid fiberglass equivalents, with the flex pattern tuned for responsive, lively surfing. AirCore technology removes material from the interior of the fin blade where it contributes little to performance, putting the structural work where it counts: the foil face and the base. The visible hexagonal honeycomb pattern on the blade is the AirCore internal structure, readable through the translucent outer shell.
Board and Wave Compatibility
This fin set is designed for the FCS II fin system, which installs without a fin key for fast box changes on the water. The template works best on performance shortboards with deep concaves and moderate to extreme rocker. It is suited to surfers who want power and drive rather than loose, skatey pivot, and to conditions from overhead beach breaks to hollow reef sessions where the rail needs to hold under load.
FCS II Fin System
FCS II boxes are the dominant fin system on modern performance shortboards. The tabless base clicks in and locks without tools, so swapping fins between sessions takes seconds. These fins are compatible with all boards running FCS II boxes and are also backward-compatible with FCS I boxes using a sold-separately adapter.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What boards are compatible with the FCS II AM PC Air Core Tri-Fin Set?
- These fins fit any board with FCS II fin boxes, which are the standard on most modern performance shortboards. The AM template is designed specifically for boards with deep concaves and moderate to extreme rocker. FCS I boxes can also accept FCS II fins with a sold-separately adapter.
- What is AirCore construction and how does it affect performance?
- AirCore is FCS's hollow interior fin technology. By removing material from the interior of the fin blade where it does not contribute to flex or stiffness, AirCore produces a lighter fin without weakening the foil or base. The weight reduction improves response and reduces swing weight through turns.
- What is the difference between FCS AM fins and other FCS templates?
- The AM template, shaped by Al Merrick, prioritizes speed, drive, and hold through powerful turns. The raked side fins generate down-the-line momentum and the smaller center fin allows quick release. Other FCS templates trade some of that drive for a looser, more pivoty feel or are optimized for different wave types.
- Do FCS II fins require any tools to install?
- No. FCS II fins use a tabless base that clicks directly into FCS II boxes without a fin key or screws. They lock securely under tension from the box itself and release by pressing the lever while pulling the fin free.
- What wave conditions are the AM fins best suited for?
- The AM template excels in hollow, steep waves and punchy beach breaks where drive and rail-to-rail power are priorities. Surfers who favor drawn-out carves and top-to-bottom lines get the most out of this template.
- Are these fins sold as a full set?
- Yes. The FCS 2 AM PC Air Core Tri-Fin Set includes two raked side fins and one center fin, which is everything needed for a thruster (tri-fin) setup.
- Where can I buy the FCS 2 AM PC Air Core Tri-Fin Set?
- The FCS 2 AM PC Air Core Tri-Fin Set is available at Island Water Sports in South Florida and online at Island Water Sports. Call 954-427-4929 for questions about the product.
