Pyzel Shadow XL: High Performance in a Bigger Package

The Pyzel Shadow XL is the expanded-outline, higher-volume sibling of the Shadow, itself the newest addition to Pyzel's acclaimed Ghost family. Where the standard Shadow is tuned for surfers who want sleek high-performance dimensions, the Shadow XL opens that same performance envelope to surfers who benefit from a wider, fuller outline without sacrificing the responsiveness and drive that define a true shortboard.

The Shadow earned SIMA Shortboard of the Year for 2019, and the XL carries forward every element that made it exceptional while dialing in the volume distribution and outline curve for surfers who want more float, more paddle power, and more margin in weaker or punchier surf.

Design Lineage: From the Phantom to the Shadow Family

Jon Pyzel started the Shadow's design process with the Phantom, a board celebrated for its flow and glide in a wide range of conditions, then refined it into a more focused, high-performance direction. The result keeps the Phantom's paddle-friendly feel while sharpening the edge for critical surfing. The XL version stays true to that lineage, pushing the outline slightly wider and bringing the volume forward to suit surfers who want to get into waves earlier and generate speed through slower sections without giving up the board's ability to work in powerful surf.

Outline and Wide-Point Placement

One of the Shadow XL's defining design decisions is where the wide point sits. Unlike most high-performance shortboards that push the wide point behind center, Pyzel positions it at center on the Shadow. This shifts the outline into a more balanced, forward-running curve that improves stability through turns and keeps the board feeling connected through the whole arc rather than pivoting around a single point.

The nose is pulled in by nearly half an inch compared to what the outline width might suggest, and rocker is added through the last twelve inches of the nose to keep the tip freed up when the board is pressed into critical, vertical turns. The result is a board that carries width and volume confidently without feeling boxy or reluctant at the top of the wave.

Tail Shape and Hip

The Shadow XL uses a squash tail that is pulled in slightly compared to what the body width suggests. That tighter tail perimeter tightens the turning radius and sharpens the board's response in the vertical portion of the wave, keeping vertical surfing capability intact even as the overall outline runs wider. A gentle hip ahead of the tail adds a touch of looseness and sensitivity, breaking the outline's flow in a controlled way that helps the tail release when you want it to rather than tracking through turns.

Rocker and Bottom Contours

Tail rocker and the bottom concave configuration on the Shadow XL carry over directly from the Phantom, a setup that has proven itself in everyday surf conditions across a broad range of environments. The rocker and concave work together to build speed through flatter sections and deliver the pivot needed for tight, powerful turns, without requiring hollow or powerful surf to come alive. This is a board that reads the conditions well across beach breaks, points, reefs, and even heavier slabs.

Thickness Flow and Volume Placement

The thickness flow on the Shadow XL is one of its most deliberate design choices. Volume is kept more forward of center, concentrated under the chest area rather than spread evenly from rail to rail. That extra foam under the front foot improves paddle power, adds float during the pop-up, and keeps the board moving through flat spots and slower sections where a thinner board would stall. The distribution is intentional rather than exaggerated; the board still transitions smoothly from rail to rail and does not feel like it is fighting you when you load the back foot for a turn.

Wave Range and Conditions

The Shadow XL is built to perform across a genuinely wide range of surf. Beach breaks, points, reefs, and slabs all fall within its design envelope. It generates speed and flow in weaker, mushier waves that would stall a narrower board, and it holds together and drives in more powerful, hollow conditions where a board without tail rocker and concave would struggle to turn. The design was tested and ridden by John John Florence, Jack Freestone, and the Pyzel team across exactly that kind of range, which gives the XL's wave-range claims a real-world basis.

Who the Shadow XL Is Built For

Pyzel describes the Shadow XL as a board that helps intermediate surfers elevate their performance while also bringing out the best in more advanced surfers. That range is genuine rather than marketing language. The forward volume and wider outline lower the entry barrier for surfers who are working toward high-performance shortboarding but still want the board to help them get into waves and generate speed. At the same time, the tail geometry, rocker, and concave give advanced surfers the tools to push the board into critical, vertical surfing when the conditions demand it.

Pyzel's own recommendation is to ride the Shadow your height to an inch over in your preferred high-performance dimensions. The variant selector on this page shows the options we have ready to go.

Fin Configuration

The Shadow XL is set up as a thruster. The three-fin configuration suits the board's design intent: it provides the drive and hold through bottom turns that the tail geometry is optimized around, and it gives the tail the release needed for vertical top turns without the looser feel of a twin or the stiffer tracking of a quad. Check the variant selector on this page for the specific fin box system included with the board you are ordering.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the Pyzel Shadow and the Shadow XL?
The Shadow XL is the wider-outline, higher-volume version of the Shadow. It carries more foam forward of center, runs a broader outline, and is designed for surfers who want the Shadow's performance character with more paddle power, earlier wave entry, and additional float. The standard Shadow is tuned for surfers who prefer leaner, more traditional high-performance shortboard dimensions.
What size Shadow XL should I ride?
Pyzel recommends riding the Shadow your height to an inch over in your preferred high-performance dimensions. The size chart on this page lists every length the model is built in along with the corresponding width, thickness, and volume so you can match the volume to your weight and ability. Use the variant selector on this page to see what we have ready.
Is the Pyzel Shadow XL good for intermediate surfers?
Yes. Pyzel specifically designed the Shadow XL to help intermediate surfers elevate their performance. The forward volume placement, wider outline, and paddle-friendly thickness flow lower the effort required to get into waves and generate speed, while the tail geometry and rocker keep the board honest and progressive as your surfing improves.
What kinds of waves is the Shadow XL designed for?
The Shadow XL is designed for a wide range of conditions: beach breaks, point breaks, reefs, and heavier slabs all fall within its envelope. The rocker and bottom concave generate speed in softer surf and provide the hold and drive needed in more powerful, hollow waves.
How many fins does the Pyzel Shadow XL use?
The Shadow XL is set up as a thruster, meaning three fins. The thruster configuration suits the board's design intent, providing the drive through bottom turns and the release needed for vertical top turns. See the variant selector on this page for the fin box system included.
What tail shape does the Shadow XL have?
The Shadow XL uses a squash tail that is pulled in slightly relative to the board's overall width. The tighter tail perimeter sharpens the turning radius and improves vertical surfing capability. A gentle hip ahead of the tail adds looseness and helps the tail release when you want it to.
Did the Pyzel Shadow win any awards?
Yes. The Shadow was awarded SIMA Shortboard of the Year for 2019. The Shadow XL shares the same design DNA in a larger-dimension format.
Who on the Pyzel team rides the Shadow?
John John Florence and Jack Freestone are among the team riders who have made the Shadow a favorite. The board was tested and ridden by the wider Pyzel team across a range of wave conditions worldwide.
