12 Years in the Making

Pompano Beach is finally getting its first public skate park. And if you know how long this took, you know why this one hits different.

The idea first surfaced at a parks advisory board meeting back in 2012. Over the next decade, it bounced around the city's master plan, got stalled, got revived, and got stalled again. What kept it alive wasn't politicians. It was skaters showing up to public meetings. Parents bringing their kids to design sessions. Local youth put their voices on record, year after year, until the city finally committed.

Ground broke on December 2nd, 2025. This July, the gates open.

Location Pompano Community Park
1801 NE 8th Street, Pompano Beach, FL

"If we don't have a skate park, our city is a skate park."

Director Moore, Pompano Beach Parks & Recreation

Anyone who's ever had to hunt for a curb, a parking garage, or an empty lot to skate knows exactly what that means. Broward County has been short on quality public skate infrastructure for a long time. This park is the first real answer to that.

Commissioner Allison Fornier added something worth repeating: "Skating doesn't age you out. There's no cutoff the way there is in little league or youth soccer. The sport grows with you. A 10-year-old learning to ollie and a 45-year-old getting back on a board both have a place here."

What the Park Looks Like

At 20,000 square feet of concrete, this is a serious facility. New Line Skateparks designed it from the ground up with input from local riders, and it shows. Every skill level has something to skate from day one.

  • Kidney

First pool coping tile kidney bowl in the entire area, a regional first.
  • Complex
    Bowl
Real pool coping and tile throughout.
  • Street
    Plaza
    10, 7, and 5 stair setups. A-frame flat bar. 26-foot down-flat-down rail.
  • Mini Ramp Solid transitions for every level.
  • Ledges,
    Slappies
    & Manuals
    The fundamentals, done right.
  • Pompano
    Fish Gap
A locally designed gap with the city's colors and iconic fish built into the concrete.

That last detail says a lot about how this park was built. It wasn't designed by a committee that had never held a board. The community had real input, and you can see it in the concrete.

Florida's Own Coming Home

Jamie Foy grew up in Deerfield Beach, a few miles from this park. Island Water Sports was his very first sponsor. Now he's a two-time Thrasher Skater of the Year (2017 and 2024), one of the most respected street skaters alive, and still an IWS team rider. This grand opening is a homecoming.

Zion Wright grew up in Jupiter, just up the coast. He went pro for Real Skateboards at 18, competed in the Tokyo Olympics, and has been one of the most exciting all-terrain skaters in the game for years. He and Foy actually moved to California together to chase their careers. Two South Florida kids who made it, coming home.

These aren't pros flying in to check a box. This is South Florida's own putting on for the community that raised them.

Why This Park Matters for South Florida Skating

One park doesn't fix everything. But it starts something.

Broward County has long been one of the least-served counties in South Florida when it comes to public skate infrastructure. No dedicated concrete parks. No free facilities built for the community. Skaters made do, the way skaters always do, finding spots wherever they could.

This park changes the equation. It's free, publicly accessible, and built at a real scale with real features. It's not a token gesture. And according to everyone involved, it's just the first of many skateparks coming to South Florida.

The park sits within walking distance of three schools and is open to skateboarders, BMX riders, and scooter users of all skill levels. It's free. No membership. No entry fee. Just show up and skate.

For the next kid in Pompano who picks up a board, there's now a place to go. A free place. A good one. That's what 12 years of work looks like when it finally lands.
