Matheson Hammock Park suits families and kids who want a gentle introduction to the water without much chop to manage. The centerpiece is a man-made atoll pool that flushes with Biscayne Bay tides, so the water stays calm and shallow. Parking & Access

The park is at 9610 Old Cutler Rd. in Coral Gables. Entry is a per-vehicle fee: 7 dollars plus tax on weekdays and 10 dollars plus tax on weekends and holidays.

Rules & Safety

Lifeguards staff the atoll pool on weekends and holidays only, and swimming is meant to happen while they're on duty. The pool is shallow and flushes with the tide, so mind your footing as the water moves. Dogs are not allowed anywhere in the park.

Restrooms, showers, grills, and picnic areas are spread around the park. The atoll pool is the main draw for families with young kids, since it stays calm and shallow with no real waves. There's no snorkeling here, and the crowd runs moderate most days.
