Maximum Flex, Serious Warmth in a Springsuit
The Buell RB1 2mm Long-Sleeve Springsuit is built around one principle: give up nothing. Where most spring suits trade warmth for mobility or mobility for warmth, the RB1 resolves that tradeoff through material science and panel engineering. The result is a suit that paddles loose, holds heat above its thickness rating, and stays sealed through an entire session.
Developed in collaboration with big-wave standout Jamie O'Brien, the RB1 is shaped by the demands of high-performance surfing rather than the demands of a retail price point. Every panel, seam, and entry feature earns its place.
Ninja Neoprene and Ultraspan Flex-Fabric
Buell's proprietary "Ninja Neoprene" is the core of the RB1. It is engineered to be significantly more pliable than conventional neoprene, reducing the resistance you feel through arm strokes and cutbacks without thinning the rubber or sacrificing insulation.
The exterior is laminated with Ultraspan flex-fabric, a four-way stretch facing that adds durability and a dynamic hand-feel while letting the neoprene underneath move freely. The same Ultraspan material lines the interior, creating a soft, warm surface against skin that heats up fast and retains that warmth even as water cycles through.
Ergonomically placed panels direct flex exactly where you need it: across the shoulders and through the torso, so the suit moves with you rather than against you.
Triple-Glued Blind-Stitched Seams with Sizzle Seam Seal
Seam construction is where 2mm suits either earn their price or expose their shortcuts. The RB1 uses triple-glued and blind-stitched seams throughout. Triple-gluing layers adhesive at each seam junction for a bond that resists delamination under repeated flex. Blind stitching passes the needle only partway through the neoprene, keeping the interior surface intact so cold water has no direct path through a needle hole.
Buell adds a second line of defense with the power-lite "Sizzle" seam seal, a flexible tape applied over the interior seam line that prevents water infiltration at the stitch itself. Together, these three layers of seam protection keep the suit warmer than the thickness rating alone would suggest.
Chest-Zip Entry System
The RB1 uses an over-the-top chest-zip entry with a crossover panel design. Chest zips eliminate the lower-back zip found on traditional suits, which removes the main cold-flush point that conventional back-zip suits are known for. Water entry is reduced to near zero once the suit is sealed.
The crossover pattern means the two halves of the chest panel overlap before the zip closes, creating a second physical barrier against flushing. A snap-tight outer flap locks over the zip once fastened, sealing the closure from the outside. Getting in takes a few extra seconds compared to a back zip; what you gain is a dramatically warmer, drier session.
Long-Sleeve Springsuit Construction
The long-sleeve springsuit format gives you full arm coverage for sun protection and warmth in warmer water while leaving legs free below mid-thigh for unrestricted lower-body movement. This is the go-to configuration when air temperature drops below the water temperature, when dawn patrol sessions start cold, or when extended time in the water demands more UV and thermal coverage than a short-sleeve spring suit delivers.
At 2mm, the RB1 sits in the warm-water-to-mild-conditions range. The Buell material and seam stack means it performs at the warmer end of that range, making it a legitimate three-season suit in South Florida conditions and a reliable daily driver in consistent warm surf.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What makes Buell wetsuits different from other brands?
- Buell wetsuits are built around proprietary Ninja Neoprene, a highly pliable rubber that delivers more stretch than conventional neoprene at the same thickness. Combined with Ultraspan flex-fabric lining, triple-glued blind-stitched seams, and a chest-zip entry system, Buell suits are engineered to run warmer and move more freely than the thickness rating alone would imply.
- Is the RB1 a good wetsuit for warm water surfing?
- Yes. At 2mm with a long-sleeve springsuit cut, the RB1 is designed for warm-to-mild water conditions. The chest-zip entry and Sizzle seam seal minimize water flushing, so it stays warmer than a standard 2mm suit. It is a strong choice for early mornings, extended sessions, or any time you want thermal and UV coverage without a full suit.
- How does the chest-zip entry on the RB1 work?
- The RB1 uses an over-the-top chest-zip with a crossover panel pattern. You pull the two chest panels across each other, zip them closed, and snap the outer flap over the zip. This creates multiple layers of closure that dramatically reduce cold-water flushing compared to a traditional back-zip entry.
- What is the Sizzle seam seal on a Buell wetsuit?
- The Sizzle seam seal is a flexible power-lite tape applied to the interior side of each seam. It works alongside triple-gluing and blind stitching to seal the seam line against water infiltration. The combination keeps the suit warmer and extends the lifespan of the seam bond under repeated flexing.
- How should I care for the Buell RB1 to extend its life?
- Rinse the suit thoroughly with fresh water after every session, inside and out. Hang it to dry in the shade on a wide hanger or over a bar to avoid creasing the neoprene at a fold point. Keep it away from direct sunlight and heat, which degrade neoprene over time. Do not machine wash or tumble dry.
- Is the Buell RB1 springsuit good for surfing in South Florida?
- Yes. South Florida water temperatures make a 2mm long-sleeve springsuit a practical choice for cooler months and early-morning sessions year-round. The RB1's warmth-to-flexibility ratio makes it especially suited to longer paddle-out sessions and conditions where you want arm coverage without bulk.
- Where can I buy Buell wetsuits near me?
- Island Water Sports carries Buell wetsuits both in store and online. You can purchase the RB1 directly on this page or visit us in South Florida. For fit questions before you buy, call 954-427-4929.
