Built for the Way Modern High-Performance Shortboards Actually Surf

The Mayhem 3.0 is an all-new template from Futures Fins, co-developed to match the direction modern HP shortboards have taken. As board rockers push more curve under the rear foot to unlock critical pocket surfing, the fins need to keep up. The Mayhem 3.0 answers with added base, increased rake, and a narrower tapered tip compared to the long-standing Futures thruster template -- the result is a fin that channels drive out of the pocket without sacrificing control.

This 5-fin set gives you the option to run a thruster or quad configuration from the same set of fins, both tuned to the Mayhem 3.0 geometry.

Honeycomb-Carbon Construction

The Mayhem 3.0 is built with Futures Fins Honeycomb construction. The honeycomb core keeps weight low while delivering a lively, responsive flex through the tip, and the carbon fiber base reinforcement adds stiffness where it counts most -- at the foil root, where torsional load is highest during hard rail-to-rail surfing. The visible woven carbon panel at the base and the blue-tinted honeycomb upper are functional, not decorative: each material is placed where its mechanical properties do the most work.

Template and Ride Characteristics

The Mayhem 3.0 sits in the Rake template category, meaning the fin is swept back and drawn out for drive and hold rather than pivot. Rake fins generate speed through longer arcing turns and hold through the pocket better than upright templates. That geometry makes the Mayhem 3.0 a strong match for surfers who want to generate power from behind the pocket and project through turns rather than snapping off the top.

Futures assigns a Ride Number to each fin to help surfers calibrate across configurations. The Mayhem 3.0 rates at 5.4 in thruster and 4.9 in quad -- both in the balanced zone, meaning neither configuration will feel stiff and draggy nor loose and unpredictable. The thruster number runs slightly higher for added hold and projection; the quad number drops a touch for the increased release and speed that quad riders expect.

Futures Fins: From Aerospace to the Lineup

Futures Fins was founded in 1996 by the Longo brothers, who came out of aerospace manufacturing and hydrogen fuel cell fabrication. That technical background is baked into how Futures approaches fin construction: materials placement, flex pattern engineering, and foil geometry are all approached with the same precision used in aerospace parts. The result is fins that perform consistently across a wide range of conditions and surfers.

5-Fin Set -- Thruster or Quad, Your Call

The set includes three thruster-sized side fins and two smaller quad rear fins, giving you full flexibility to set up your board either way. Whether you want the connected, driving feel of a thruster or the speed and release of a quad, the Mayhem 3.0 template translates well across both configurations.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Futures Mayhem 3.0 template designed for?
The Mayhem 3.0 is a Rake template designed for critical pocket surfing on modern high-performance shortboards. More base, increased rake, and a narrower tapered tip than a standard thruster template translate into added drive and hold through the pocket compared to more upright fin templates.
What is the difference between Honeycomb and Carbon construction in surfboard fins?
In the Mayhem 3.0, honeycomb construction provides a lightweight, lively flex through the upper fin body and tip, while the carbon fiber base panel adds stiffness and torsional resistance at the root where load is highest during hard turns. The combination gives you responsiveness at the tip without sacrificing drive and hold at the base.
Can I run the Futures Mayhem 3.0 5-fin set as a quad?
Yes. The set includes both thruster side fins and quad rear fins, so you can run either a thruster or quad setup with the same fins. The Ride Number in quad configuration is 4.9, which is in the balanced range -- responsive and fast without feeling loose.
What does the Futures Ride Number mean?
Futures Fins' Ride Number is a single-value scale that captures the combined effect of flex, stiffness, and template geometry on how a fin feels. A lower number means looser and faster; a higher number means stiffer and more driving. The Mayhem 3.0 rates at 5.4 in thruster and 4.9 in quad -- both in the balanced mid-range.
What surfboard fin box does the Futures Mayhem 3.0 fit?
The Mayhem 3.0 is built for the Futures fin system. It fits any board with Futures fin boxes and will not fit FCS or other tab-style systems without an adapter.
Is the Futures Mayhem 3.0 5-fin set available at Island Water Sports?
Yes. The Mayhem 3.0 5-fin set is available at Island Water Sports in South Florida and online at islandwatersports.com. Questions? Call us at 954-427-4929.
