Championship Template, Sustainable Construction
The Futures JJF-2 Alpha is the same Neutral template John John Florence rode to back-to-back World Surf League Championships, now built with Alpha construction. Alpha combines Bureo's NetPlus recycled fishing nets with Futures' Compound 6 (C6) carbon fiber and air-infused technology, delivering a competition-proven foil in one of the most sustainably made fin sets on the market. Made in Huntington Beach, California.
Neutral Template: Versatile Performance
The Neutral template category means exactly what it says: balanced drive, release, and pivot that adapts to a wide range of surfing styles and conditions. This is not a specialty fin tuned for one wave type. It generates reliable hold through vertical carves, releases predictably off the top, and pivots with enough responsiveness for critical maneuvers in everything from beachbreak to point surf. The template sits at a Balanced Ride Number of 6.3, placing it squarely between stiff drive and loose release.
Alpha Construction
Alpha construction is built around two core technologies:
- Bureo NetPlus Recycled Fishing Nets - Bureo sources discarded fishing nets from South American coastal communities, processes them into high-quality nylon pellets, and feeds that material into fin production. The result is a structural component with a genuine closed-loop material story, not a token sustainability add-on.
- Compound 6 (C6) Carbon and Air Infusion - Futures' C6 carbon layup is combined with air-infused technology to reduce weight while maintaining torsional stiffness. The layup is visible on the fin face as the signature striped carbon pattern. Less mass at the tips means faster pivot response without sacrificing the drive the Neutral template is built for.
Futures Fins: Built by Surfers, Engineered for Performance
The Longo brothers brought aerospace fabrication experience and a background in hydrogen fuel cell research into surfing in 1996, founding Futures Fins in Huntington Beach. That engineering discipline shows in every construction decision, from how carbon layers are oriented to how the fin base interfaces with the Futures fin box system. The JJF signature template is one of the most tested fin designs in competitive surfing history.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the Futures JJF Alpha fin set?
- The Futures JJF Alpha is a three-fin thruster set built on the Neutral template John John Florence used to win back-to-back World Surf League Championships. Alpha construction uses Bureo NetPlus recycled fishing nets combined with Compound 6 (C6) carbon and air-infused technology, made in Huntington Beach, California.
- What does the Neutral template mean for how these fins surf?
- Neutral means the template is balanced across drive, release, and pivot. It is an all-around foil that performs in a wide range of wave types and conditions rather than being optimized for one specific style. The JJF Alpha has a Balanced Ride Number of 6.3, sitting in the middle of the drive-to-release spectrum.
- What is Alpha construction?
- Alpha construction pairs Bureo's NetPlus recycled fishing net material with Futures' Compound 6 (C6) carbon fiber and air-infused layup technology. The recycled nylon from discarded fishing nets provides structural integrity while the C6 carbon and air infusion reduce weight and maintain torsional stiffness for quick pivot response.
- What is Bureo NetPlus and why does it matter?
- Bureo collects discarded fishing nets from coastal communities and processes them into recycled nylon used in fin construction. Including NetPlus material in the Alpha build diverts fishing net waste from the ocean and gives the fin a verifiable recycled-material component rather than a marketing claim.
- Are these fins compatible with my board?
- The JJF-2 Alpha set is compatible with all Futures fin boxes, which are the most widely used fin system on production surfboards. Check your board's fin boxes to confirm they are the Futures system before purchasing.
- How many fins come in the set?
- The JJF-2 Alpha ships as a complete three-fin thruster set. No additional fins are required.
- Where can I buy the Futures JJF Alpha thruster fin set?
- The Futures JJF Alpha is available in store and online at Island Water Sports. Visit or shop online for current stock.
