The Evil Twin+1 is a twin fin plus trailer combo developed by Matt "Mayhem" Biolos and prototyped in direct collaboration with Future Fins. The template is an exact replica of the twin fins Mayhem originally shaped for his RNF board close to 25 years ago. When a friend rediscovered an original mid-90s hand-foiled pair, the relevance of that large-surface-area design was immediately apparent, and the Evil Twin was born.
Mayhem tested a prototype set on his step-ups in solid, overhead Indo surf and found the setup performed far beyond typical twin fin expectations. His words: "I would actually forget I was using them."
Template and Performance Characteristics
The twin fins carry an upright stance with a swept-back tip and generous surface area. This geometry delivers the drive and precise pivot of a Hybrid Keel template while preserving the loose, free sensation that twin fin riders seek. The paired trailer is intentionally smaller than average, which draws out turns, adds stability and projection, and keeps that unencumbered twin fin feel intact.
The result is a setup that works on twin fin specific shapes as well as any board designed to revel in twin fin flare, from fish outlines to performance step-ups.
Honeycomb Construction
These fins are built in Future Fins' Honeycomb construction. A honeycomb core reduces overall weight while maintaining torsional stiffness through the foil, giving the fin a responsive, lively flex pattern under load. The construction keeps the fin light enough to feel nimble through pivot turns without sacrificing the drive needed in larger, more powerful surf.
Future Fins: The Origin
Future Fins was founded in 1996 by the Longo brothers, who brought an aerospace fabrication background to fin design, including experience with hydrogen fuel cell components. That engineering precision carried directly into their fin systems and continues to define the brand's approach to construction and foil geometry today.
