Description

The Firewire Dominator Pro is Dan Mann's performance answer to the all-rounder question: a board with enough width and curve through the midsection to paddle into anything, yet a pulled outline and refined tail that reward surfers who want to push hard on the rail in quality surf. It is the board Mann calls a true daily driver for capable surfers who refuse to sacrifice performance for comfort.

Firewire Dominator Pro: Shape and Design

Dan Mann built the Dominator Pro around a fuller, rounder outline than a competition shortboard, widening the center of the board to create a larger planing surface without losing the responsiveness that defines a performance shape. The nose is pulled in for control through steep drops, while the wider midsection flows into a round-pin tail that keeps hold through powerful, hollow sections and carves cleanly off the top.

Rocker is dialed to a medium-low entry that helps the board get onto plane quickly in weaker, walling surf, stepping up into a controlled exit rocker that releases through turns and lets the tail drive hard off the back foot. The result is a board that works across a broad range of wave energy without feeling flat and unresponsive in the punchier stuff.

The bottom contour runs a single concave through the entry, blending into a double concave under the fins. That transition creates drive on the way into a turn and acceleration out of it, channeling water toward the fins to generate speed even when the surfer is not actively pumping down the line.

Dominator Pro Fin Setup and Wave Range

The Dominator Pro is designed as a thruster, and the fin placement supports an active, pivot-driven surfing style. The fin cluster is positioned to balance hold in critical sections with the snap and release most surfers expect from a performance shortboard. The fin box system accepts standard fins from the variant selector on this page.

Wave range runs from thigh-high beachbreak, where the outline's width keeps the board lively, up through overhead-plus reef and point surf, where the round-pin tail and refined rocker line come into their own. It is not a mushy-wave groveler and it is not a step-up for giant surf; it is the board that covers the wide middle ground between those two extremes.

Firewire Construction and Feel Under Your Feet

This version of the Dominator Pro is built in Firewire's lightweight construction, identifiable by the H-shield badge on the board. The build uses a combination of materials that reduces overall weight while maintaining the snap and responsiveness a performance shape demands. The balsa wood rail strips visible along the edge are a structural and aesthetic signature of Firewire's approach, adding torsional strength and a distinctive warm tone to the finished board.

Under your feet the board feels lively and quick to respond. Lighter overall weight means less resistance when redirecting off the lip, and it translates directly into how early the board paddles into a wave and how easily it generates speed in the first few pumps down the line.

Who the Dominator Pro Is For

The Dominator Pro suits intermediate to advanced surfers who want a single board that handles the full range of conditions they realistically surf in a given week. If you have been surfing a groveler on the small days and stepping up to a dedicated step-up when it gets good, the Dominator Pro is built to collapse that two-board quiver into one. It rewards surfers who surf with their back foot and who know how to use a rail, but its outline gives enough forgiveness that an improving surfer moving up from a fish or hybrid will find it accessible.

Surfers comparing the Firewire Dominator Pro vs Dominator 2 will find the Pro is the more performance-oriented option: sharper outline, refined tail, and designed for surfers pushing into better surf rather than maximizing ease in weak conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions
What waves is the Firewire Dominator Pro best for?
The Dominator Pro is designed to cover a wide range: from thigh-high, punchy beachbreak all the way up to well-overhead reef and point surf. Its medium-low entry rocker helps on weaker days while the round-pin tail and controlled exit rocker hold through powerful, critical sections. It is not a dedicated groveler or a step-up gun; it is the board that handles most of what you surf in a given week.
Is the Dominator Pro a good board for intermediate surfers?
Yes. The Dominator Pro is designed for intermediate to advanced surfers. Its wider midsection and fuller outline give more paddle power and forgiveness than a competition-spec shortboard, making it accessible to an improving surfer who is ready to move beyond a fish or hybrid. Advanced surfers will find it responsive and drivey when pushed on the rail. It rewards surfers who surf with their back foot.
What is the difference between the Firewire Dominator Pro and the Dominator 2?
The Dominator Pro is the higher-performance option. It has a more refined outline, a tighter round-pin tail, and is aimed at surfers pushing into better, more powerful surf. The Dominator 2 is the wider, more volume-forward everyday model designed for a broader skill range and weaker conditions. If you are a confident surfer who wants a board that performs in good surf but still works on smaller days, the Pro is the better fit.
What fin setup does the Dominator Pro use?
The Dominator Pro is set up as a thruster, which is the standard three-fin configuration. It has a five-fin box layout, meaning the board has five fin plugs. The variant selector on this page shows the fin box system included with each option.
How do I pick the right Dominator Pro size for my weight and ability?
As a general guide, experienced surfers can size down toward their shorter wave boards while intermediate surfers typically benefit from a bit more length and volume. The complete dimensions and liters chart on this page lists every size in the lineup. If you want a personal recommendation based on your weight, height, ability, and the surf you primarily ride, call our team at 954-427-4929.
What is the construction on the Firewire Dominator Pro Helium?
The Helium build is Firewire's lightweight construction option, producing a noticeably lighter board than traditional PU builds. Lighter weight translates directly into quicker response off the top, easier paddling, and faster speed generation in the first pumps down the line. The balsa wood rail strips on the board add structural stiffness and are a distinctive visual feature of this construction.
