Two Designs. One Board. The Firewire Mashup Volcanic.
The Firewire Mashup is the result of a genuine collaboration between two of surfing's most respected design minds: Rob Machado and Dan Mann. Each shaper brought his most celebrated outline to the table, Machado's Seaside for its loose, flowing speed in gutless surf, and Mann's Spitfire for its vertical pop and drive in punchy, more powerful conditions. What emerged is a board that earns both of those reputations without compromise.
The Mashup sits in the groveler category by label, but it performs well above the category ceiling. In weak, mushy surf it generates speed the way the Seaside does, holding momentum through flat sections and letting the rider set a generous, drawn-out arc. When the wave offers a steep lip or a fast down-the-line section, the Spitfire side of the outline comes through with the vertical drive you'd expect from a proper shortboard. That dual personality is the design brief, and it delivers.
Shape and Outline
The Mashup carries a wide, rounded nose with pronounced volume pushed forward through the midsection, keeping paddle power high without sacrificing sensitivity underfoot. The outline transitions into a compact, pulled-in tail that concentrates release and snap when the rider needs to pivot hard off the top. The rocker profile is deliberately low through the entry, which feeds into the board's flat-out speed in small surf, while a subtle lift through the tail keeps the rail engaged through sharper turns.
The bottom contour runs a deep single concave through the front half, transitioning into a double concave through the fin cluster. The single feeds speed into your feet early in the ride; the double splits into the thruster fins and channels that energy into drive and projection off the bottom. The result is a concave sequence that feels fast on the draw and alive at the top of the arc.
The Mashup runs a thruster (three-fin) configuration. That choice reflects the design intent: twin fins would amplify the loose, skatey feel, but the thruster keeps the board honest in better surf, adding hold and giving the rider the option to push hard off the back foot without the tail sliding out. The fin boxes are compatible with a wide range of fin options, so riders can tune the feel toward either parent design depending on the day's conditions.
Volcanic Construction
The Mashup Volcanic is built with Firewire's basalt-fiber lamination process. Basalt fiber, woven from volcanic rock, wraps the core in a shell that is lighter and more responsive than standard fiberglass while retaining a flex pattern that feels alive rather than stiff. The finished board has a distinctly textured, matte-grey surface finish, visible in every image, that differentiates it immediately from a standard glass job. Beyond aesthetics, the construction produces a livelier flex and a longer-lasting deck, resisting pressure dings and delamination better than traditional polyurethane builds.
The weight savings from the basalt laminate translate directly to paddle speed and sensitivity through each maneuver. When the board is lighter, the tail releases more freely and the rail engages the water with less resistance. For a groveler designed to extract performance from soft, slow surf, those fractions matter more than they would on a board destined for hollow overhead waves.
Who the Mashup Volcanic Is For
The Mashup is pitched at intermediate through advanced surfers who want a single board that handles the majority of their local lineups. It is not a beginner board. The wide outline and extra volume make it forgiving on small days, but the design rewards surfers who already have their footwork dialed and want to extend that into weaker surf rather than sitting out the chest-high days waiting for better conditions.
For South Florida surfers, where the surf is most often small and somewhat crumbly, the Mashup Volcanic is a practical daily driver. It paddles into waves that a performance shortboard would miss, generates speed through flat sections that would otherwise kill momentum, and still responds when the occasional better wave shows up. Riders who own a quiver often find the Mashup becomes the board they reach for most often, not just the small-day backup.

Firewire Mashup vs. Seaside: What Is the Difference?
The Seaside (Machado's design) is longer and more drawn-out through the outline, prioritizing glide and rail surfing over vertical attack. The Mashup borrows that forward volume and paddle ease but shortens and tightens the tail, adding the Spitfire's snap and drive. The Mashup will feel slightly more pivoty and responsive than a same-length Seaside, while still retaining most of the Seaside's small-wave speed.
Firewire Mashup Fin Setup
The Mashup Volcanic comes set up as a thruster. The three-fin setup is Firewire's recommended configuration for this shape, balancing the drive needed for vertical surfing with the hold required to push through turns in better surf. Riders who prefer a looser, more skatey feel can experiment with running just the two side fins, which shifts the board closer to the twin-fin personality of the Seaside. Check the variant selector and product details for the fin box system used in your specific board.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the Firewire Mashup Volcanic?
- The Firewire Mashup Volcanic is a collaborative groveler shortboard shaped by Dan Mann and Rob Machado. It merges the small-wave speed and flow of Machado's Seaside with the vertical drive and pop of Mann's Spitfire, built in Firewire's basalt-fiber Volcanic construction.
- How does the Firewire Mashup compare to the Seaside?
- The Seaside is a longer, more glide-oriented design that excels at rail surfing and drawn-out lines in weak surf. The Mashup borrows the Seaside's forward volume and paddle ease but introduces a tighter, more pivoty tail from the Spitfire. The result is a board that generates Seaside-like speed but also responds with vertical snap when the wave allows it.
- Is the Firewire Mashup good for beginners?
- The Mashup is best suited for intermediate to advanced surfers. The wide outline and extra volume make it accessible and forgiving on small days, but it is not designed as a learn-to-surf board. Riders who can already generate speed and link turns will get the most out of what this shape offers.
- What fin setup does the Firewire Mashup Volcanic use?
- The Mashup Volcanic is configured as a thruster (three fins). Firewire recommends the thruster setup for the balance of drive and hold it provides across a range of conditions. Riders wanting a looser feel can experiment with running just the side fins as a twin, which shifts the board toward the freer, flowing character of the Seaside.
- What waves is the Firewire Mashup designed for?
- The Mashup is designed primarily for small to medium surf, including weak, mushy, or gutless conditions where a standard shortboard struggles to generate speed. It also handles better, punchier surf with confidence. It is a genuine daily driver for surfers who want one board that covers most conditions.
- How do I size the Firewire Mashup Volcanic?
- Firewire recommends sizing the Mashup slightly shorter than your standard shortboard because of its extra volume and wide outline. Check the full size chart on this page for every length with its width, thickness, and volume, then use your weight, fitness level, and local wave size to select. For personalized guidance, call Island Water Sports at 954-427-4929.
- What is the difference between the Firewire Mashup Volcanic and Helium constructions?
- Both constructions share the same dimensional blueprint across all sizes. The Volcanic build uses basalt-fiber lamination, which produces a textured matte finish and a lively, responsive flex with excellent durability. The Helium uses a fiberglass lamination with a different core treatment. The right choice comes down to personal preference for flex feel, finish, and budget.
