Rob Machado's Keel Design, Built by Firewire

Rob Machado's relationship with keel fins goes back to a set of hand-foiled Larry Gephart fins he rode on a Skip Frye fish during the filming of Seedling. Those fins, which Machado describes as looking like beautiful plywood cut-outs with a perfect foil, sparked everything that followed in his thinking about fish shapes and keel geometry. The Firewire Machado Twin Keel Fin is the product of that long creative arc, translated into a production fin that surfers can actually put under their boards.

Keel Fin Geometry

Keel fins are defined by their wide base and relatively low rake. That geometry produces a sensation completely different from standard thruster fins: a long, drawn-out arc through turns, a planted, drivey feeling through the bottom, and a loose, skatey release off the top when you let the tail break free. The wide base pushes water early and builds speed on flatter sections where a smaller fin would stall. The low rake keeps the fin from locking up in the pocket, so you can pump and release with control rather than fighting the fin through transitions.

At 132 mm tall with a 167.5 mm base and a total area of 16,000 mm², these keels are substantial fins built to generate serious drive. That proportion, a base notably wider than the height, is the hallmark of the classic keel template Machado drew his original inspiration from.

Firewire Construction

Firewire applies the same philosophy to fins that it applies to boards: innovative materials and advanced construction methods over conventional shortcuts. The result is a fin that holds its template precisely, resists flex distortion under load, and maintains consistent performance session after session. The Rob Machado signature is on each fin in the set, reflecting the direct collaboration between Machado and Firewire's design team.

Two Tab vs. Single Tab

These fins are offered in two fin system formats. Use the variant picker to select the system that matches your boxes. If you are unsure which system your board uses, check the fin box hardware or bring the board in to Island Water Sports and we can confirm it on the spot.

Who These Fins Are For

These keels suit surfers who ride fish shapes, retro twins, or any twin-fin setup and want the full classic keel experience with modern build quality. If you have spent time on smaller twin fins and wanted more drive and hold, the keel template delivers exactly that. If you are new to twin fins entirely, keels are one of the most fun ways to discover what riding without a center fin actually feels like.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a keel fin and a standard twin fin?
A keel fin has a much wider base relative to its height compared to a standard upright twin fin. The wide base generates more drive and hold through turns, creating a longer, more drawn-out arc. Standard twins are typically raked and more upright, giving a looser feel with quicker pivoting. Keel fins suit surfers who want speed and flow; standard twins suit those who prefer a snappier, more pivoting ride.
Who designed these fins?
Rob Machado designed the keel template in collaboration with Firewire. Machado traces the inspiration to a set of hand-foiled Larry Gephart fins he rode on a Skip Frye fish during the filming of Seedling. Each fin in the set carries the Rob Machado signature.
What fin system do these fit?
Two variants are offered: Two Tab for dual-tab fin boxes, and Single Tab for single-tab boxes. Select the style that matches your board's fin system using the variant picker. If you are unsure, bring your board in to Island Water Sports for a quick check.
What boards do twin keel fins work best with?
Twin keel fins are the classic choice for fish shapes and retro-style twin fins. They also work well on any board set up as a twin. The wide base and low rake produce the most drive on boards with flatter rockers and wider tails, which is the natural pairing for the keel template.
Can I use these fins as a single fin or in a thruster setup?
No. These are a dedicated twin keel set designed to be used as a matching pair in a twin-fin configuration. They are not intended for single-fin or thruster setups.
How do I install and maintain these fins?
Install using the appropriate fin key and screws for your box system. Do not overtighten, as this can crack the fin base or strip the box. After salt water sessions, rinse the fins and boxes with fresh water. Inspect the base for chips before each use, as a cracked fin base can cause box damage or fin loss in the water.
