The Mikey February Signature Shorty from Channel Islands

Channel Islands Surfboards has built its reputation on one principle: let the world's best surfers drive the design. The Mikey Shorty is the direct result of that philosophy. Shaped to Mikey February's exact specifications, this board distills years of competitive feedback into a shortboard that prioritizes flow and speed without sacrificing the sharp, precise feel that performance surfing demands.

CI is a privately held organization with no corporate agenda pulling it away from what matters: rider-driven product and the best possible equipment. The Mikey Shorty exists because Mikey February needed it to exist, and that origin story is visible in every element of the shape.

Shape, Outline, and Rocker

The Mikey Shorty carries a compact, pulled-in shortboard outline with a moderately pointed nose and a rounded pin tail. The tail keeps the board locked into the pocket on steeper, hollower sections while the fuller mid-section rail gives the board its characteristic carry through flat or open-face waves. Nothing about the outline is accidental: it reflects the wave range Mikey February surfs and the style he brings to it.

The rocker profile is moderate, calibrated to generate speed early on the takeoff without losing drive through turns. It is not a flat rocker built purely for speed and not a high-entry rocker built purely for steep drops. It sits in the performance middle ground where most real waves live.

Bottom Contours and Rail Design

The bottom contour transitions from a subtle concave through the front half into a double concave through the fin cluster. The entry concave lifts speed and drive off the tail pad. The double concave in the fin area channels water cleanly between the fins and out the tail, producing a lively, springy response under the back foot. Rail shape is a medium tuck, providing grip on rail turns while still releasing cleanly when you push the board into a snap or an aerial.

Fin Configuration

The Mikey Shorty runs as a thruster (three-fin setup). The thruster configuration gives the board its combination of drive, hold, and the pivot you need to hit the lip or lock into a carving turn. The center fin adds drag-control in larger surf and hold through longer arcs; the side fins generate the speed and release. This is a pure performance shortboard fin setup matched to the demands of the shape.

Construction and Feel

The board is built in polyurethane (PU) construction, the traditional shortboard blank material that surfers have trusted for decades. PU delivers a lively, responsive flex pattern that feeds energy back through your feet, particularly through snappy top-to-bottom surfing. It is the construction choice of surfers who want to feel the wave through the board rather than insulate themselves from it.

Who the Mikey Shorty Is Built For

This board suits intermediate to advanced surfers who want a high-performance thruster with a slightly more forgiving, flowing character than a pure competition sled. If you surf with style and prioritize rail surfing, drawn-out carves, and smooth flow over pure aerial power moves, the Mikey Shorty rewards that approach. It also performs well for surfers stepping up from a step-up or funboard who are ready to commit to a true shortboard outline.

The board is equally at home in clean, shoulder-high point break conditions and punchy beach break, covering the wave range that makes up most people's actual surfing. Frequently Asked Questions
What kind of surfboard is the Channel Islands Mikey Shorty?
The Mikey Shorty is a performance shortboard designed in collaboration with South African pro surfer Mikey February. It runs a thruster (three-fin) setup in a compact, pulled-in outline with a rounded pin tail, built to deliver flow and speed across a wide range of wave conditions.
What waves is the Mikey Shorty good for?
The Mikey Shorty performs best in clean, shoulder-high to overhead surf with some face to work: point breaks, beach breaks with a bit of push, and punchy reef setups. Its moderate rocker generates early speed on gentler waves while the rounded pin tail holds in on steeper, hollower sections. It is not designed as a big-wave step-up or an everyday small-wave board.
Is the Mikey Shorty good for intermediate surfers?
The board is built for intermediate to advanced surfers. Intermediates who already have solid fundamentals (reading the lineup, generating their own speed, trimming a shortboard rail) will find it approachable. Complete beginners or early intermediates who are still building pop-up consistency will find a longer, higher-volume board more suitable for their progression.
How does the Mikey Shorty compare to other Channel Islands shortboards?
The Mikey Shorty sits on the flowing, stylish end of the CI performance shortboard range. It prioritizes smooth, rail-to-rail surfing and carving over pure vertical attack. Surfers looking for a more aggressive, stiff competition feel may prefer another CI model. Surfers who value drawn-out turns, speed through sections, and a board that matches their surfing style will connect with the Mikey Shorty.
What size Mikey Shorty should I ride?
Size selection depends on your weight, ability, and the waves you surf most. The complete manufacturer size chart with all published lengths, widths, thicknesses, and volumes is listed directly on this page. Use the variant selector to see the sizes currently offered, and use the chart to match your volume needs. If you want a personal recommendation, call us at 954-427-4929 and one of our staff can help you dial in the right choice.
Does the Channel Islands Mikey Shorty come as a thruster?
Yes. The Mikey Shorty is configured as a thruster (three-fin setup) across all variants. The three-fin arrangement gives the board its combination of drive, hold, and the controlled pivot that shortboard performance surfing demands. See the variant selector on this page for fin system options.
