The Dumpster Diver 2: Dane Reynolds' Modernized Everyday Ripper
The Channel Islands Dumpster Diver 2 was born from a simple observation. While filming Out of the Rafters, Dane Reynolds was riding the original Dumpster Diver and noticed just how short and compact it felt underfoot. That feeling sparked a question: what if you took everything that worked about the original and stretched it into something longer, wider, and more at home in the full spectrum of everyday surf? The answer became the DD2.
Channel Islands is a privately held organization focused on rider-driven design and manufacturing the best performance equipment possible. The driving force behind CI is the demand on design created by the world's greatest surfers, and the Dumpster Diver 2 is a direct expression of that philosophy: build what the surfer actually needs, not what a catalog says they should ride.
Design: What Makes the CI Dumpster Diver 2 Different
Compared to the original Dumpster Diver, the DD2 carries a wider nose and a wider tail, which together produce a noticeably fuller outline from tip to tail. That extra plan shape translates directly into early entry on weaker sections and a more planted, connected feel through turns. The board is not a fish and it is not a traditional shortboard; it occupies the productive middle ground where most surfers spend most of their sessions.
The rocker profile was also revised. Both the nose and tail rocker were increased relative to the original, giving the DD2 better release in the pocket and more control when the wave face steepens. The result is a board that does not bog when the surf is punchy but does not spin out when you find a proper wall.
Underneath, Channel Islands shaped a more subtle single concave through the midsection. The original Dumpster Diver ran a more pronounced concave; the DD2 dials it back so that speed generation feels more effortless and the board flows rather than chattering under your feet on less-than-perfect days. This is the tweak that makes the DD2 genuinely fun in two-to-four foot beachbreak, not just tolerable.
Construction: PU and Spine-Tek Options
The DD2 at Island Water Sports is available in two construction builds. The classic polyurethane build delivers the familiar flex pattern and lively feel that performance surfing was built on. A premium alternative construction option is also available for surfers who want a livelier, snappier response underfoot with enhanced durability. Both builds share the same UL/SO 4+4/4 glass schedule, which keeps the board light without sacrificing the structural integrity you need when you are surfing it hard session after session. Select your preferred build from the variant selector on this page.
Fin Configuration: Thruster Setup
The DD2 runs as a thruster, the three-fin setup that has powered high-performance shortboarding for decades. Three fins give you drive off the bottom, hold through the pocket, and predictable pivot off the tail. The thruster configuration on the DD2 complements the wider tail outline: the tail has enough area to generate drive through turns, and three fins ensure that drive stays controlled and directional. Fin box options are noted in the variant selector on this page.
Wave Range and Skill Level
The Dumpster Diver 2 was designed to excel across a wider range of conditions than a standard high-performance shortboard. Its extra width and fuller outline pay dividends in everyday beach break where the waves are inconsistent, the faces are shorter, and catching anything mediocre takes a board with real paddle power. The additional nose rocker keeps the board from pearling on steeper take-offs, and the tail rocker gives you an exit when the wave pockets up fast.
In better surf, the DD2 holds its own. The squash tail, combined with the revised concave, generates enough speed through flat sections to keep you in the pocket, and the thruster setup gives you the hold needed to push through bigger, more powerful turns.
This is a board for surfers who can generate their own speed and control their edge, typically intermediate to advanced surfers comfortable on performance shortboards. If you are regularly surfing waist-to-overhead beach break and want one board that covers most of your sessions, the DD2 was built exactly for that scenario. The variant selector on this page shows the build, fin box, and length options.
Channel Islands Surfboards: The Brand Behind the DD2
Channel Islands Surfboards, shaped under the Al Merrick label, has been at the center of high-performance surfing for decades. The brand's riders include some of the most demanding competitive surfers on the planet, and every design that reaches a retail shelf has been tested by people who will immediately notice if something is off. The Dumpster Diver 2 carries that lineage: it was developed by Dane Reynolds, one of the most influential freesurfers of his generation, and it reflects what he actually wanted to ride, not a marketing brief.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the Dumpster Diver 2?
- The Channel Islands Dumpster Diver 2 (DD2) is a performance shortboard designed by Dane Reynolds and shaped by Al Merrick. It is a longer, wider, modernized evolution of the original Dumpster Diver, built to rip across a broader range of everyday surf conditions. Key updates include a wider nose and tail, increased nose and tail rocker, and a more subtle single concave compared to the original.
- How does the Dumpster Diver 2 compare to the original Dumpster Diver?
- The DD2 is longer and wider than the original, with more nose and tail rocker and a dialed-back single concave. These changes make the DD2 more versatile: it paddles better, handles a wider variety of wave sizes and shapes, and gives you more control in steeper surf, while still delivering the loose, playful feel the original Dumpster Diver was known for.
- What fins does the Dumpster Diver 2 use?
- The DD2 runs a thruster (three-fin) setup. The specific fin box system varies by variant. Check the variant selector on this page to see which fin box option corresponds to each build and size.
- What size Dumpster Diver 2 should I ride?
- Size selection depends on your height, weight, skill level, and the surf you ride most. The full manufacturer size chart is posted on this page. As a general guide, surfers looking for extra paddle power in smaller surf typically size up slightly from their standard shortboard length, while advanced surfers comfortable generating speed may prefer their usual length. If you want a personalized recommendation, call Island Water Sports at 954-427-4929.
- What is the DD2 good for?
- The Dumpster Diver 2 was built to excel across a wide range of everyday conditions, from weak, crumbly beach break to overhead-plus surf with proper walls. Its fuller outline and increased rocker make it forgiving in average surf while still being capable when the waves improve. It is an excellent daily driver for intermediate-to-advanced surfers who want one board that covers most sessions.
- What is Spine-Tek construction?
- Spine-Tek is a premium construction alternative to the standard polyurethane build. It is designed to deliver a livelier, more responsive feel with added durability. Both construction options share the same DD2 shape; the difference is in the feel and flex of the finished board. Select your preferred build from the variant selector on this page.
- What are the Dumpster Diver 2 dimensions?
- The complete size chart with length, width, thickness, and volume for every size the DD2 is manufactured in is published in the size guide on this page. The variant selector shows which specific options are available to purchase.
- How does the Dumpster Diver 2 compare to the Happy Everyday and Better Everyday?
- The DD2, Happy Everyday, and Better Everyday all occupy the performance everyday-board category but take different approaches. The DD2 sits on a thruster setup and prioritizes a more traditional high-performance shortboard feel with extra volume. The Happy Everyday and Better Everyday use different outlines and concave configurations. If you want to compare these models side by side, call us at 954-427-4929 and we can walk you through which design suits your style and the surf you ride.
