The Classic Softtop from Island Water Sports

Since 1978, Island Water Sports has been Deerfield Beach's neighborhood surf shop, and the IWS Classic Softtop is the board we put under more first-timers and comeback surfers than any other in the shop. It is designed around one idea: get you to your feet, keep you there, and survive South Florida surf long enough to actually learn something.

Construction Built for Real-World Use

The deck is wrapped in a thick extruded foam skin that absorbs wipeouts, knees, and elbows without bruising back. Beneath that soft exterior sits a rigid EPS (expanded polystyrene) core that gives the board its buoyancy and pop. Three marine-ply stringers run nose to tail, stiffening the flex so the board responds to your weight shifts instead of noodling under you.

The bottom is a hard HDPE (high-density polyethylene) shell, not another layer of foam. That matters: the slick, impact-resistant bottom sheds water cleanly on the drop, holds speed through flat sections, and takes the punishment of shallow sand-bar breaks and accidental reef taps far better than a soft underside would.

Outline, Rocker, and How It Rides

The Classic's outline is generous from nose to tail. A rounded, pulled-in nose prevents pearling in steeper sections while the wide midsection delivers the float that beginners need to paddle into waves with confidence. The tail narrows into a clean, functional shape that allows the fins to engage and the board to pivot without requiring precise footwork from the rider.

Rocker is kept moderate: flat enough through the belly to generate speed on soft, rolling South Florida surf, with enough entry curve to handle the occasional punchy shore break. It is a shape that works in waist-high beach-break slop and scales up comfortably as the rider's skill grows.

Fin Setup and Stability

Three bolt-through fins are installed in a thruster configuration. A thruster setup on a beginner-oriented board is a deliberate choice: twin-fin and quad setups can feel loose and slippy underfoot before a rider has built muscle memory. The center fin of a thruster acts as a pivot anchor, giving directional hold through turns so the board does not skid out sideways when you shift weight. A slot-box option is available at select retailers for riders who want to swap or adjust fins down the road. A bolt-through leash plug is built into the fin area, keeping the attachment point reinforced right where the board takes the most stress.

Who It Is For

The Classic Softtop suits beginners who want a forgiving first board, intermediates returning to the water after time off, groms learning to generate speed and trim, and anyone who simply wants a fun, low-consequence board for casual sessions. The soft deck means you can share it with friends, let kids bodyboard it, or toss it on a roof rack without a boardbag. It is equally at home as a rental-fleet workhorse or as a personal board that lives in the garage and comes out whenever the surf is cooperative.

Surfers already comfortable on a shortboard who want something to cruise on or loan to a visiting friend will find it an honest, no-fuss choice. The weight and volume reward paddle power over precision technique, which makes it forgiving in the kinds of mushy, summer beach-break conditions common along the Deerfield Beach coastline.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Island Water Sports Classic Softtop good for beginners?
Yes. The thick foam deck, wide outline, and generous volume make it one of the most forgiving shapes a first-time surfer can learn on. The thruster fin configuration holds a line and prevents the board from sliding out sideways, which gives beginners the stability they need while they build their pop-up and balance.
What size soft top surfboard should I get?
The Classic Softtop is an 8-foot board, which is an ideal length for most beginners and lighter intermediates. As a general guide, longer and wider boards paddle easier and provide more stability. If you are unsure whether this 8ft board is the right fit for your height, weight, and skill level, check the size chart on this page or call the IWS shop at 954-427-4929 and a staff member will walk you through it.
What waves is the Classic Softtop designed for?
It is shaped for small to medium beach-break waves, which is exactly what South Florida's coast delivers most of the year. Waist-to-chest-high, rolling or slightly punchy surf is the sweet spot. The moderate rocker keeps it fast in soft conditions, and the volume carries you through flat spots between sets.
Can I change the fins on this board?
The board ships with three bolt-through fins installed in a thruster setup. A slot-box option is available at select retailers, which would allow you to swap fins. If you have questions about fin compatibility, stop by the IWS shop or call us at 954-427-4929.
What is the difference between the soft deck and the hard HDPE bottom?
The soft EBS foam deck cushions impact, making wipeouts and knees-on-board contact much less painful than a hard fiberglass deck. The HDPE bottom is rigid and slick, which allows the board to release cleanly off the wave face, hold speed through flat sections, and resist damage from sand and shallow reefs.
How does the Island Water Sports Classic Softtop compare to other foam surfboards?
The Classic stands out for its triple marine-ply stringer construction, which prevents the longitudinal flex and twist that plagues cheaper single-stringer foamies. The HDPE hard bottom is another differentiator over fully-soft boards: it performs more like a traditional surfboard underfoot while keeping the forgiving foam deck on top.
Is this the Island Water Sports swallow tail softtop surfboard?
The Classic Softtop uses a clean, functional tail outline suited to the thruster fin configuration. For specific tail shape details or to compare models, visit the shop at Deerfield Beach or call 954-427-4929.
