The key bungee cord inside the flap pocket is there to secure a car key or similar small item during a session, so you are not leaving valuables on the beach or in the boat while you paddle out.
Since the fixed waist relies on the drawcord closure rather than an elastic band alone, it is worth cinching the drawcord snug before you paddle out so the fit stays secure through duck dives and turns rather than loosening over the course of a session.
