From the Water to Whatever Comes Next

The Nelson DryTwill Amphibian 18" Short is built for the guy who does not want two pairs of shorts for one day. It goes in the water, it dries fast, and it looks clean enough to wear everywhere else. No changing room required.

REPREVE Recycled Nylon Construction

The shell is woven from Quiksilver's exclusive REPREVE recycled fabric, a certified performance nylon produced from post-consumer plastic bottles. The 4-way stretch twill weave gives the fabric a structured, chino-like appearance while flexing in every direction without resistance. At 96% Nylon and 4% Elastane, the build is durable enough for daily use and handles repeated exposure to saltwater, chlorine, and washing without breaking down.

DryFlight Water-Repellent Coating

Quiksilver's DryFlight is a hydrophobic coating applied to the face of the fabric that causes water to bead and roll off rather than soaking into the weave. After getting wet, these shorts shed water fast and dry in minutes. The moisture-wicking properties of the nylon construction work underneath to pull any remaining moisture away from the skin while the exterior catches up. You leave the water, and by the time you reach the car, they are done.

Construction and Fit Details

  • 4-way stretch twill weave for full range of motion in and out of the water
  • Moisture-wicking properties keep you comfortable while the short dries
  • 18" outseam, a versatile length that works on the beach and off it
  • Slim fit: cut snug but not tight, with enough room for an active day
  • Non-corrosive zip fly resists saltwater and repeated washing without sticking or corroding
  • Button closure at the waistband
  • Side-entry hand pockets
  • Patch pocket on the back

Care

Machine wash cold. Tumble dry low. Skip fabric softeners and dryer sheets as they coat the fibers and reduce the hydrophobic effect of the DryFlight finish over time. If water repellency decreases after extended use, a low-heat tumble dry cycle can help reactivate the coating.

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes Quiksilver Amphibian shorts different from a regular boardshort?
The Nelson DryTwill Amphibian uses a 4-way stretch twill weave fabric with a DryFlight hydrophobic coating, so it looks like a chino short and functions like a water-ready hybrid. A standard boardshort is built primarily for surf performance. The Amphibian is built to go in the water and then look appropriate everywhere else without changing.
How quickly do the Quiksilver Amphibian shorts dry?
The DryFlight coating causes water to bead off the fabric surface rather than soaking in, and the moisture-wicking nylon construction pulls residual moisture away from the skin. In warm conditions the shorts dry in minutes after leaving the water.
What is REPREVE fabric?
REPREVE is a certified recycled performance fiber made from post-consumer plastic bottles. Quiksilver uses it in the Amphibian line to produce a durable, lightweight nylon without relying on virgin petroleum-based fiber. The performance characteristics are comparable to standard nylon.
Are the Nelson Amphibian shorts suitable for surfing?
The Nelson Amphibian handles paddleboarding, kayaking, beach swimming, and casual surf sessions well. The 4-way stretch and water-repellent coating work in the water. For high-performance competitive surfing, a purpose-built stretch boardshort is typically the better choice, but the Amphibian is capable for most recreational sessions.
How should I care for the DryFlight water-repellent finish?
Machine wash cold and tumble dry low. Avoid fabric softeners and dryer sheets, which can break down the hydrophobic finish over time. If water repellency diminishes after extended use, a low-heat tumble dry cycle can help reactivate the coating.
Can the Nelson DryTwill Amphibian be worn off the beach as a casual short?
Yes. The slim fit and clean twill face give the short the profile of a casual chino. The DryFlight coating dries the fabric in minutes after water exposure, so transitioning from the beach or dock to a restaurant or errands is the intended use case.
Where can I buy the Quiksilver Nelson DryTwill Amphibian 18" Short?
The Nelson DryTwill Amphibian 18" Short is available at Island Water Sports in South Florida and online at Island Water Sports.
