Toric Shield Performance Built on the Turbine Legacy

The Oakley Turbine Rotor Sunglasses take the proven Turbine platform and push it further with a toric shield lens design that delivers extended coverage from edge to edge. Where the original Turbine built its reputation on precise fit and optical clarity, the Rotor adds interchangeable icons and inset sure-grip zones that let you customize the look without giving up a single millimeter of protection. The result is a frame that moves seamlessly from the water to the street without compromising on either performance or style.

O Matter Frame Construction

The frame is built from Oakley's lightweight O Matter material, a stress-resistant thermoplastic that absorbs the flex and impact of active use while keeping weight low over long sessions. O Matter does not become brittle in cold conditions or soften in heat, making it a reliable choice for South Florida sun and beyond. The frame geometry is engineered around Oakley's Three-Point Fit system, which contacts the face at only three precise points -- the bridge and the two temple tips -- so the lenses stay in exact optical alignment without pressure points, even during prolonged wear.

Unobtainium Grip System

The earsocks and nosebombs are made from Unobtainium, Oakley's proprietary grip material that increases its coefficient of friction as it contacts moisture and perspiration. The more you sweat, the more secure the frame becomes -- a counterintuitive advantage that pays off during hard paddling, surfing, or any activity where a conventional frame would begin to slip. The inset Unobtainium zones integrated into the interchangeable icon areas extend this grip across more contact points without adding bulk or changing the clean silhouette of the frame.

Prizm Lens Technology

Prizm lenses are engineered to heighten specific bands of color that matter most in a given environment. Rather than simply darkening the view, Prizm fine-tunes light transmission to increase contrast and surface detail -- making it easier to read terrain, water texture, and road conditions at a glance. The toric curvature of the Rotor's shield lens optimizes peripheral vision across the full field of view, eliminating the distortion that can occur at the edges of flatter lens geometries.

Plutonite Lens Material and UV Protection

The lens substrate is Plutonite, Oakley's proprietary optical-grade material that filters 100% of UVA, UVB, and UVC radiation as well as harmful blue light up to 400nm. This protection is inherent to the material itself, not a coating that can wear off with cleaning or salt exposure. For conditions where glare reduction is a priority, the optional Iridium lens coating tunes light transmission to reduce reflected glare from reflective surfaces including water and pavement. The HDPolarized option applies Oakley's polarization technology at the lens manufacturing stage, producing polarized lenses with a level of optical clarity and color accuracy that exceeds standard polarized eyewear.

Impact and Optical Standards

The Turbine Rotor meets or exceeds the ANSI Z80.3 standard for both optical clarity and basic impact resistance. This certification covers optical power, prismatic deviation, and transmission, confirming that the lenses perform to a verified standard rather than a marketing claim. For water sports, outdoor activities, and everyday driving, this standard is the relevant benchmark for protective eyewear in the United States.

Frequently Asked Questions
What makes the Oakley Turbine Rotor different from the standard Turbine?
The Turbine Rotor uses a toric shield lens that provides extended coverage across a wider field of view compared to the standard Turbine's dual-lens setup. It also features interchangeable icons and inset Unobtainium grip zones that give the Rotor a more customizable, performance-focused design.
Are the Oakley Turbine Rotor lenses replaceable?
Yes. Oakley offers replacement lenses for the Turbine Rotor, including Prizm and polarized options. Island Water Sports can help point you to the right replacement lens for your frame.
What is Prizm lens technology?
Prizm is Oakley's proprietary lens technology that fine-tunes light transmission to enhance color contrast and surface detail in specific environments. Rather than uniformly darkening the view, Prizm selectively amplifies the wavelengths most relevant to your activity, making it easier to read terrain, water, and road conditions.
Are the Oakley Turbine Rotor Sunglasses polarized?
Polarization is available as an option via Oakley's HDPolarized technology, which is applied during the lens manufacturing process for superior optical clarity compared to standard polarized coatings. Check the variant selector for the current polarized options in stock.
How does Unobtainium grip work?
Unobtainium is Oakley's proprietary rubber compound used for the earsocks and nosebombs. Its grip increases with moisture and perspiration, so the frame becomes more secure the more active you are. This is especially useful in water sports and high-output activities where sweat would cause a conventional frame to slip.
Do the Oakley Turbine Rotor Sunglasses provide full UV protection?
Yes. The Plutonite lens material filters 100% of UVA, UVB, and UVC radiation as well as harmful blue light up to 400nm. This protection is built into the lens material itself and does not degrade with cleaning or extended use.
