Description

The Nova is the Haydenshapes board for the day you actually get, not the one you hoped for. It is a high speed small wave driver built for everything from flat to overhead, and in South Florida that covers most of the year.

The design is all about generating speed you do not have. A wider outline carries momentum straight through a dead section. Extra area through the nose and tail gets the board moving off the mark. A medium rocker keeps it lively once it is up and running, so it stays responsive in the pocket instead of feeling like a shape you have to drag around. It is a wave count board, and wave count is the whole game on a waist high Tuesday.

This one is built in FutureFlex, the construction Hayden Cox developed and patented: a stringerless high density EPS core wrapped in biaxial glass and epoxy, with a parabolic carbon fibre frame running around the rails. Tom Carroll rode the first prototype. It is lighter and springier than a PU board, sits higher on the water, and makes its own speed in weak surf, which is exactly why it is the construction we recommend here.

Ride it 2 to 4 inches shorter than your standard shortboard, or straight to your usual target volume. It suits everyone from an improver through to an advanced surfer.

Surfboards at Island Water Sports are in store pickup only. Fins sold separately.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size Nova should I ride?
Two to four inches shorter than your standard shortboard, or straight to your usual target volume. Because the outline is wider and carries more area, the shorter length does not cost you paddle power.
Is the Nova a good board for South Florida?
It is the one we point most people at. It is built to make speed in weak, small surf, which describes the majority of days here. If you are buying one Haydenshapes board and you surf mostly at home, this is it.
What is FutureFlex?
Hayden Cox's patented construction: a stringerless high density EPS core laminated with biaxial fibreglass and epoxy, with a parabolic carbon fibre frame around the rails. It is lighter and springier than traditional PU, sits higher on the water, and generates speed more easily in weak surf. Tom Carroll road tested the first prototype.
How does the Nova differ from the DarkNoiz?
Different jobs. The Nova is a small wave driver for wave count and speed when the surf is weak. The DarkNoiz is a round pin performance board for waves with power, built to hold a line through long turns. Most surfers here want the Nova; the DarkNoiz is for swell and for travel.
Is it suitable for a beginner?
Haydenshapes rates the Nova from beginner through to advanced, and the extra volume and width make it forgiving. If you are on your first hard board, come in and let us size you off the rack rather than guessing from a chart.
Can I have it shipped?
No. Every surfboard at Island Water Sports is in store pickup only, collected at our Deerfield Beach store.
