The Christenson Acid Phish: Where Fish Feel Meets Shortboard Performance

The Christenson Acid Phish earns its name by blending the free-flowing glide of a classic fish with a more performance-oriented outline that lets you drive off the back foot and surf vertically in the pocket. Chris Christenson shaped this board as his answer to a recurring question: what if a fish could match a shortboard turn for turn without sacrificing any of that unmistakable down-the-line speed?

The result is a silhouette that reads as a fish at a glance but rewards like a shortboard when the wave walls up. It is a board that surfers reach for when the surf sits in that fun, punchy range and they want to make the most of every section.

Outline and Rocker

The Acid Phish carries a rounder, wider outline through the middle than a conventional shortboard, but it is noticeably narrower in the nose than a traditional fish. That pulled-in nose slims down the swing weight so the board responds crisply when you need to pivot off the tail, rather than swinging wide the way a fuller fish nose can. The tail narrows into a classic fish swallow, which splits drive between two points and adds speed through flatter sections while still releasing cleanly on tighter arcs.

Rocker sits low, keeping the board fast and paddle-friendly, but it is not so flat that it loses control in steeper surf. The entry is relaxed through the mid-section, then kicks slightly through the tail to give you something to pivot off when you want to come off the top.

Bottom Contour

Under the deck the Acid Phish runs a single concave through the center that transitions to a subtle double concave as it approaches the fin area. The single entry channels water through the center of the board for lift and directional flow. The double near the tail separates that flow into two channels that run parallel to each side of the swallow, adding drive and stiffening the rail-to-rail response when you push through turns.

Twin-Fin Character

This board is built as a twin. Two fins, set wide and canted, are the Acid Phish's defining personality trait. The wide placement extends the drive arc so the board feels like it is always accelerating out of a turn rather than stalling. Without a center fin, pivot and release come from the rider, which rewards surfers who like to stay loose, draw out their lines, and feel the board slip and release at will. The twin setup also contributes to that distinctive skatey, front-foot connected sensation that fish lovers seek out.

Waves and Conditions

The Acid Phish earns its keep in the knee-to-overhead range, especially when waves are punchy, hollow, or walling. It paddles earlier than a shortboard of similar length, so it opens up more waves per session. At the same time, the narrowed nose and performance rocker let you take it into steeper beach break and still control the drop without the board getting away from you the way a fuller fish might.

Backside surfers in particular benefit from the rounder outline through the hips. The board tracks through backside rail turns more predictably than a classic fish, which can be squirrelly under the back foot on a heelside arc. Frontside, the twin-fin freedom shines in open-faced carves and on down-the-line runs where you can draw long, flowing lines before snapping off the tail.
