Hobe Sound is a remote, lefts-favoring beach break inside the Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge, with a reef sitting about a half-mile offshore. It's intermediate, best on a clean NE swell with W offshore wind and a mid, incoming tide, and stays quiet except when a good swell brings a crowd.

How It Breaks

Hobe Sound is a beach break with an offshore reef about a half-mile out, inside the Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge. It favors lefts, is rated intermediate, and normally stays low crowd and quiet, though it can get busy when the surf is actually up. It's inconsistent and mostly flat through summer.

Best Conditions

Best swell is NE, with a W offshore wind and a mid, incoming tide. Winter NE swell and fall groundswell are the reliable windows, since it goes flat most of summer otherwise. Hazards include rocks, sharks, remote access, and rip currents, so this isn't a spot to check casually without a plan.

Cam Line and Know Before You Go

Watch the live cam at the Martin County EVS beach cam before making the drive out. Know the flags and rip currents before paddling out, this is a reef and rock bottom in spots so booties are worth it, and keep an eye on the inlet current and boat traffic.

Parking and Local Tips

Parking is free at both the Hobe Sound Beach lot and the Jupiter Island access point. Local tip: it needs a good NE swell, with offshore wind holding it up, and it makes a nice, quieter escape from the crowds down in Jupiter when it's working.

Gear and the Shop

Bring a wetsuit for the winter NE swell season and a leash built for a remote, reef-adjacent break. Island Water Sports carries surfboards, wetsuits, leashes, wax and traction, fins, ding repair kits, and board bags. FAQ

Is Hobe Sound crowded?

Usually low crowd since it's remote and inside a wildlife refuge, but it can get busy when the surf is actually up and a good NE swell is running.

What makes Hobe Sound different from other beach breaks nearby?

It has an offshore reef sitting about a half-mile out, favors lefts, and sits inside the Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge, which keeps access remote and the crowd thin.

What season is best for Hobe Sound?

Winter NE swell and fall groundswell. It goes flat through most of summer, so timing your trip to a real swell window matters here.
