The Firewire TJ Pro Mid is the mid-length surfboard that refuses to compromise. Co-designed by shaper Dan Mann and longboard world champion Taylor Jensen, it delivers the paddle ease and stability you expect from a longer board while adding the liveliness and responsiveness that keeps experienced surfers coming back to it session after session.
Firewire Mid Length Design: Rocker, Rails, and Bottom Contour
The outline starts with a full, rounded nose that generates exceptional glide and paddle power off the front third of the board. Moving back, the plan shape narrows into a performance-influenced tail that is notably pulled in for a board of this length. That combination is intentional: it gives you the catch-anything entry you want from a mid-length paired with the pivot and release you need to make the board feel alive underfoot rather than sluggish.
The rocker is kept deliberately flat, which keeps the board fast and easy to paddle, with enough flip through the nose to handle steeper, punchier sections without burying the tip. Flat is fast, and flat means you are catching waves before anyone else on the lineup.
The bottom contour begins flat through the front section and transitions into a double concave running through the mid-section and toward the tail. That progression is subtle rather than extreme: it builds lift and promotes flow without sacrificing the smooth, connected feel the board is known for. Rails are neutral and forgiving through the front half, then tighten and tuck as they approach the fins, releasing energy cleanly off the tail when you ask for a sharper turn.
Fin Configuration: 4 + 1 Versatility
The TJ Pro Mid runs a 4 + 1 fin setup: a center longboard box paired with four side fin boxes. That configuration gives you three distinct personalities to explore. Run it as a 2 + 1 in smaller, mushier surf for a looser, trimming feel. Switch to a quad arrangement in punchy, faster waves to unlock speed down the line and a more skatey tail release. Or simplify things entirely and ride it as a single fin when you want that classic flowing, tip-to-tail glide. The board rewards experimentation, and each setup genuinely changes the way it surfs.
Construction: Epoxy Core with Volcanic Lamination
This version is built on an epoxy core with the Volcanic lamination, a construction pairing that produces a board feeling noticeably lively under your feet from the first session. The layup is light without feeling fragile, and that liveliness does not dull with age. Epoxy construction also resists water absorption better than traditional polyester, so the board holds its weight and pop over the long term. The result is a package that is durable and responsive in equal measure.
Wave Range: Knee High to Overhead and Everything Between
Few surfboards perform across such a wide window of conditions. The TJ Pro Mid has been surfed in knee-high onshore beachbreak and in lined-up, overhead offshore point surf, and it is genuinely fun in both. The flat rocker and volume distribution make it forgiving and fun when the surf is small, while the performance tail outline and firm rear rails give it enough hold and drive to handle solid, cleaner conditions without washing out. If you surf a wide variety of conditions and want one board that handles all of them well, this is a serious candidate.
Who Is the Firewire TJ Mid For?
The TJ Pro Mid is one of the most genuinely versatile mid-length surfboards on the market. A beginner can get to their feet and learn the fundamentals on this board because the volume and paddle power make everything easier. An intermediate surfer will use it as their step-up or everyday driver when the surf is not firing for a shortboard. An experienced surfer will appreciate how much snap and response it hides beneath that easy-going exterior. If you are shopping for your first mid-length, or your fifth, the TJ Pro Mid belongs on the shortlist.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is the Firewire TJ Mid a true mid-length or a longboard?
- It sits right at the intersection of the two categories. The outline and fin versatility give it mid-length performance and responsiveness, while the volume distribution and paddle power lean longboard. Firewire classifies it as a mid-length, but surfers who enjoy longboarding often find it feels right at home.
- What is the Firewire mid length surfboard good for?
- The TJ Pro Mid is designed to be fun across a wide range of conditions, from small, gutless beachbreak to lined-up overhead point surf. Its flat rocker makes it fast and easy to catch waves in weak surf, while its performance tail outline provides hold and drive in better, more powerful conditions.
- How do I choose the right TJ Pro Mid size for my weight and ability?
- As a general rule, more volume suits heavier surfers and beginners who benefit from extra paddle power and stability, while lighter or more advanced surfers can often ride lower volume for more responsiveness. Check the size chart on this page for the full dimensions across the range, then use the variant selector to see what is available. If you want a personal recommendation, call us at 954-427-4929 and our staff will help you pick.
- What fin setup should I use on the Firewire TJ Pro Mid?
- The board's 4 + 1 box layout lets you ride it as a 2 + 1, quad, or single fin. A 2 + 1 setup tends to feel loose and flowing in smaller surf. A quad unlocks more drive and down-the-line speed in punchier conditions. A single fin gives classic, nose-to-tail glide if that is the style you are after. Most surfers start with 2 + 1 and experiment from there.
- Is the Firewire TJ Pro Mid good for beginners?
- Yes. The volume, paddle power, and stability the TJ Pro Mid provides make it a genuine option for beginners learning to catch and stand on waves. At the same time, it has enough performance design to grow with a surfer well into intermediate and advanced territory, so it is not a board you outgrow quickly.
- What is the difference between the Firewire TJ Mid and the TJ Pro Mid?
- They refer to the same board. Firewire uses both names in their marketing and product lineup. The full model name is the TJ Pro Mid, co-designed by Dan Mann and Taylor Jensen.
- How durable is the Volcanic construction on the TJ Pro Mid?
- The Volcanic epoxy lamination is built to be light, lively, and long-lasting. Epoxy construction resists water absorption better than traditional polyester, which means the board holds its feel and weight over time. Riders consistently report that the lively, responsive flex does not deaden with age the way some traditional builds can.
