What is actually happening

Jamie is in the shop for the hour and a half. There are signed posters, there are free giveaways, and the rest of it is exactly what the flyer calls it: a shop hang. Nothing to book, nothing to pay, come by whenever suits you inside the window.

The Fun Day boards are in the store as well, so you can pick one up and get a proper look at one instead of judging a soft top from a photograph.

Who is Jamie O'Brien

He grew up in a house directly in front of the Banzai Pipeline on Oahu's North Shore. His father was a lifeguard who had moved to Hawaii to surf and put him on a board at three years old, which is about as direct a route into surfing as exists.

In 2004, at twenty one, he won the Billabong Pipeline Masters, one of the youngest ever to do it, at the wave he had grown up watching from his front window. He also took the Hansen Pipeline Pro, the Expression Session at Trestles, the Rip Curl Invitational and the Volcom Pipeline Pro, and he is in the Surfers' Hall of Fame.

Then he stopped competing. After 2005 he went freesurfing and started filming everything, and Who Is JOB turned into the series that made him one of the most watched surfers alive. He runs a surf school in Hawaii, and a few years ago he started his own board brand.

Fun Day Surf, and why soft tops are not only a beginner board

Fun Day Surf is his brand. Soft tops, hybrids, bodyboards and hand planes, plus apparel, all under the line Don't Fight the Fun. He has described it as a colorful, playful brand that really reflects his personality, which tracks if you have watched five minutes of his videos.

Here is the part worth knowing if you have ever been talked out of a foam board. In December 2025 he took a Fun Day soft top out at Pipeline. Not a mellow day at Pipeline either. A board with more than a hundred litres of foam in it, at the wave that has broken more boards and people than anywhere on earth. The Inertia called him the best test pilot for a Pipeline foamie in the world.

Soft tops catch more waves than they have any right to, they hurt a lot less when they hit you, and a good number of very good surfers ride them because they are more fun, not because they have to. If that has changed your mind, our soft top boards are worth a look.

Who is Jamie O'Brien?

A Hawaiian professional surfer who grew up in a house in front of the Banzai Pipeline and won the Pipeline Masters there in 2004. He left competition behind after 2005 for freesurfing and filmmaking, and his Who Is JOB series made him one of the biggest names in surf media. He is in the Surfers' Hall of Fame, runs a surf school in Hawaii, and founded Fun Day Surf.

What is Fun Day Surf?

Jamie O'Brien's own brand, built around soft tops, hybrids, bodyboards and hand planes, plus apparel. The tagline is Don't Fight the Fun and the whole idea is that surfing should be enjoyable at any level.

Are soft tops only for beginners?

No, and Jamie is the best argument against it. In December 2025 he took a Fun Day soft top out at Pipeline, one of the heaviest waves in the world, on a board carrying more than 100 litres of foam. Soft tops catch more waves, hurt less when they hit you, and plenty of good surfers ride them by choice.

Can I bring my kids?

Yes. It is a free in-store event with nothing to sign and nobody going in the water.

Where do I park?

Use the Deerfield Beachplace Parking Garage at 123 NE 20th Ave. On a weekday it is $3 an hour with a $20 daily maximum. More options are on our parking guide.
