Al Merrick's Large-Template Thruster, Built for High-Performance Surfing
The Future Fins FAM2 Thermotech Thruster Set is a large, balanced fin template co-designed by Al Merrick of Channel Islands Surfboards. Built to perform at the top of the pack, it delivers true reliability across a wide array of conditions, from open-faced beach breaks to point break walls.
Thermotech Construction
Thermotech is Futures' proprietary construction method that integrates a honeycomb core structure within the fin foil. This process produces a fin that is lightweight yet exceptionally stiff, allowing the template's designed flex characteristics to translate directly into performance. The honeycomb patterning visible on the fin face is not cosmetic; it is the structural core working through the foil. The result is a fin that responds consistently session after session without the deformation that softer constructions develop over time.
Template and Foil Design
The FAM2 template is built around a neutral flex pattern, providing a predictable, even response through turns. The wider base generates increased drive off the bottom, loading power into each turn and giving the surfer the push needed for vertical re-entries and extended rail surfing at the highest levels. The refined tip geometry allows easy release at the top of turns, preventing the fin from locking up in critical sections. Additional rake adds hold on rail, keeping the board tracking through longer, drawn-out arcs without spinning out.
Center Fin
The center fin in this thruster set is intentionally sized smaller than the side fins. This asymmetry increases overall maneuverability of the setup, loosening pivot and allowing the surfer to redirect more freely without sacrificing the drive and hold the side fins provide.
Ideal Wave Conditions
The FAM2 Thermotech is designed for point breaks and open-faced waves where a surfer needs sustained drive through long sections, reliable hold on rail, and crisp release off the top. The Ride Number of 4.6 places this fin on the stiffer, higher-drive end of the spectrum, making it well suited for surfers who generate their own speed and surf at a committed, powerful level.
Futures Fin System Compatibility
This set fits the standard Futures fin box system, the same plug system found on boards shaped by Channel Islands, Pyzel, Lost, and dozens of other major shapers worldwide. The plug system allows tool-free installation and a secure, rattle-free connection during surfing.
About Future Fins
Future Fins was founded in 1996 by the Longo brothers, who brought an aerospace fabrication background to surf fin design. Their experience manufacturing complex structural components and hydrogen fuel cells for research directly informed the material science and construction methods that define the Thermotech line today.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What construction is used in the FAM2 Thermotech Thruster Set?
- The FAM2 uses Futures' Thermotech construction, which integrates a honeycomb core within the fin foil. This produces a lightweight, stiff fin with consistent flex characteristics and long-term durability compared to softer constructions.
- Who designed the FAM2 fin template?
- The FAM2 template was designed by Al Merrick of Channel Islands Surfboards. It is a large, balanced template built for high-performance surfing with an emphasis on drive, hold on rail, and clean release off the top.
- What wave conditions is the Futures AM2 Thermotech Thruster Set best for?
- It is optimized for point breaks and open-faced waves where sustained drive, rail hold, and top-turn release are priorities. The Ride Number of 4.6 places it toward the stiffer, higher-drive end of the spectrum.
- Does the FAM2 Thruster Set fit all Futures fin boxes?
- Yes. The FAM2 Thermotech set uses the standard Futures plug system, compatible with any surfboard equipped with Futures fin boxes. No tools are required for installation.
- Why is the center fin in a thruster set smaller than the side fins?
- A smaller center fin reduces pivot resistance, making the overall setup more maneuverable. In the FAM2 set, the side fins carry the drive and hold while the smaller center fin keeps the board loose enough to redirect quickly.
- What is the Ride Number on the Futures FAM2 Thermotech and what does it mean?
- The FAM2 Thermotech has a Ride Number of 4.6. Futures' Ride Number is a combined score of template size, construction stiffness, and foil. A 4.6 indicates a larger, stiffer, high-drive fin suited to powerful, committed surfing.
- Can I buy the Futures FAM2 Thermotech Thruster Set at Island Water Sports?
- Yes. The FAM2 Thermotech Thruster Set is available in store and online at Island Water Sports. For questions, call 954-427-4929.
