Rob Machado's Everyday Board

The Firewire Seaside and Beyond is Rob Machado's personal answer to a single question: what one board do you take everywhere? The answer started with a conversation with Skip Frye, one of the most celebrated fish shapers of all time, who showed Machado what a fish could do stretched into the seven-foot range. Machado rode the idea home, shaped a 7'0 Seaside, and that board became a fixture in his quiver for every condition he encountered.

"It glides. It turns on a dime and most importantly it puts a smile on my face," he wrote of that first version. The Seaside and Beyond carries that same energy into a refined, production-built shape that surfers of a wide range of abilities can ride.

Firewire Seaside Design: Longer Fish, Not a Longboard

The outline tells you everything before you even paddle out. The Seaside and Beyond keeps the wide, full nose and the fish-inspired swallow tail of its shorter sibling, but stretches the platform into a midlength range that unlocks a completely different category of wave-catching ability. Where a standard shortboard asks you to work for speed, this shape generates glide almost automatically, letting you focus on placement and flow.

The rocker profile is relaxed through the entry, encouraging early paddle-ins and smooth projection down the line. The tail rocker tightens enough through the back third to keep the board responsive when you want to redirect, carve, or snap off the top. This is a board that paddles like a longboard but pivots like a much shorter fish, and that combination is exactly what makes it so versatile.

The wide point sits forward of center, pushing volume where it matters for smaller surf while preserving a narrower, more refined tail block for control. The bottom contours move from a soft single concave through the center into a subtle double through the fins, accelerating water flow and making the board feel lively underfoot even when the ocean is barely moving.

The Swallow Tail and the Twin-Plus Fin Setup

The swallow tail is the other signature detail. It reduces surface area at the back of the board to loosen release and increase pivot, then splits into two points that each hold their own rail engagement through turns. The result is a tail that can grip when you need to drive and release when you want to spin. Paired with the twin-plus quad-option fin configuration, you can tune the feel from a loose, pivot-forward twin to a more driven, down-the-line quad depending on conditions and personal preference. The variant selector on this page shows the construction option we carry.

Who the Seaside and Beyond Is For

This is a quiver-of-one board for a wide range of surfers. Intermediate and advancing surfers who want a shape that catches more waves, generates effortless speed in weaker surf, and still responds when the waves have something to say will find the Seaside and Beyond immediately rewarding. Experienced shortboarders looking to add a fun, non-demanding board to their rotation will appreciate how quickly it snaps back into the pocket despite its extra length. And anyone who spends time surfing mushy, small-to-medium beach break, where raw paddle power and glide matter more than radical rocker, will understand immediately why Machado called this his everywhere board.

It is genuinely happy in everything from waist-high crumblers to well-overhead walls, and the extra length gives it a composure in choppier, messier surf that shorter fish shapes simply cannot match.

Firewire Construction Quality

Firewire builds the Seaside and Beyond with the same commitment to innovative materials and advanced construction methods that defines the brand. The Volcanic finish visible on the board is part of Firewire's sustainable approach to production, incorporating recycled content into the laminate without compromising stiffness or durability. The result is a board that feels responsive and lively while holding up to regular use in the lineup.

Frequently Asked Questions
What kind of waves is the Firewire Seaside and Beyond best for?
The Seaside and Beyond was designed with everyday, all-condition surfing in mind. Rob Machado rode his personal 7'0 version in super small days, bigger days, and everything in between. It shines in mushy, weaker beach break where its glide and paddle volume make catching waves effortless, but it handles itself well in more powerful surf too. Think of it as the board you grab when you are not sure exactly what the ocean will deliver.
Is the Firewire Seaside and Beyond good for beginners?
The Seaside and Beyond is best matched to intermediate surfers who are already comfortable catching unbroken waves and linking turns, through advanced surfers who want a high-performance midlength in their quiver. Its extra length and volume reward surfers who already have the fundamentals, allowing them to surf with more flow and less effort. True beginners would typically benefit more from a larger, softer board first.
How does the Firewire Seaside and Beyond compare to the original Seaside?
The Seaside and Beyond stretches Machado's original Seaside concept into a longer, fuller midlength platform. Where the shorter Seaside leans more toward a high-performance fish, the Seaside and Beyond tilts toward glide and ease of use while keeping the same responsive swallow tail and fish-inspired outline. The "Beyond" in the name signals that extra length and the wave range it opens up.
What fin setup does the Seaside and Beyond use?
The Seaside and Beyond is set up for twin-plus quad versatility. You can run it as a twin for a looser, more pivot-friendly feel or add the trailer fins to dial in drive and hold for more powerful surf. Both setups work well; which you prefer depends on wave conditions and personal style. Check the variant selector on this page for the construction option we stock.
How do I choose the right size Firewire Seaside and Beyond?
The full dimensions and volume for each length are in the size chart above. As a general guide, lighter or less experienced surfers tend to benefit from stepping up in length for extra paddle volume, while heavier or more experienced surfers often prefer the shorter end of the range for a snappier, more responsive ride. If you have questions about fit, call us at 954-427-4929 and one of our staff surfers can help you decide.
Who designed the Firewire Seaside and Beyond?
The board was conceived and shaped by Rob Machado, one of the most stylistically influential surfers of his generation. The design was directly inspired by a session with legendary fish shaper Skip Frye, who showed Machado what longer fish shapes could do. Machado stretched the concept, rode the prototype everywhere, and the Seaside and Beyond was born from that personal quiver experiment.
