The FCS Julian Wilson Grom Traction Pad is a junior-specific tail pad developed in partnership with one of the most precise surfers in the world. It brings the same grip technology and tail-control geometry found in Julian Wilson's own pad lineup, scaled to suit developing groms who want professional-level feedback without a pad that overpowers a smaller board.

FCS developed this pad through direct collaboration with elite surf athletes and shapers, ensuring every design choice serves real surfing performance rather than aesthetics alone. The result is a pad that holds its position under rail-to-rail transitions, stays locked through aggressive top turns, and gives young surfers the confidence to push their progression.

Three-Piece Construction and Grip Surface

The Grom pad ships as a three-piece set: two side panels and a center section. This split construction lets you position each piece precisely to match the tail template of the board, accommodating pin tails, squash tails, and everything in between. The side panels feature a raised square-grid texture across the full standing surface, giving the back foot consistent traction whether conditions are glassy or choppy. Circular cutout perforations break up the surface pattern on the outer panels, reducing overall weight without sacrificing the grip area your foot actually contacts.

The center piece carries a triple-bar arch bar running the full length of the section. The arch bar serves two functions: it supports the natural arch of the foot during compressed maneuvers and acts as a positive tactile reference so the surfer always knows where the foot sits on the board without looking down. Both capabilities directly support quicker, more committed surfing.

Tail Kick and Board Feel

A kick at the tail end of the pad gives the back foot a hard stop point during pop-ups and re-entries. Combined with the arch bar's positioning cue, the kick lets a young surfer place their foot in exactly the same position on every wave, building the muscle memory that translates into consistent performance. The charcoal accent base color visible at the bottom edges contrasts with the black foam surface, showing alignment during installation.

Installation

The pad ships with pre-applied peel-and-stick adhesive on each piece. Clean and dry the tail deck of the board thoroughly before placing each section. Position the center piece along the stringer first, then align the side panels with the tail outline. Apply firm pressure across the full surface of each piece and allow the adhesive to cure before surfing. Avoid submerging a freshly installed pad for at least a few hours to ensure a lasting bond.
