Built for the Water, Engineered to Move
The Hyperfreak Tech V is O'Neill's performance boardshort for surfers who demand stretch, durability, and fast-dry comfort in a single package. Variable Stretch Jacquard construction places targeted stretch exactly where paddling and popping up require it, while a 186 GSM fabric weight keeps the short light without sacrificing structure. At 20" outseam and 9.5" inseam, the fit lands at the knee -- the performance sweet spot between free range of motion and staying put on the board.
Hyperdry DWR Technology
O'Neill's Hyperdry Durable Water Repellent (DWR) finish causes water to bead and shed off the surface rather than saturating the fabric. The result is a boardshort that feels lighter the moment you step out of the water and dries faster between sessions -- critical when you are surfing multiple days back-to-back or heading straight from the beach.
Welded Construction Throughout
Traditional stitched seams absorb water, add bulk, and create friction points against skin and a wetsuit. The Hyperfreak Tech V replaces them with welded seams and tech welded angled eyelets. Welding bonds fabric layers with heat rather than thread, producing a flatter, lighter, and more waterproof join. The angled eyelets are also welded in position, so they drain cleanly without catching or pulling. The welded zip pocket secures valuables without the bulk of a traditional sewn pocket.
Fixed Waist and Flex Tie Drawcord
The fixed waist delivers a structured, consistent fit that does not gap or shift during aggressive movement. A flex tie drawcord adds fine-tune adjustment and locks the waist securely in place -- no re-tying needed between sets. The combination is low-profile under a wetsuit and stays comfortable over a full session.
Recycled Fabric Construction
The Hyperfreak Tech V fabric blend incorporates recycled polyester, reducing the short's environmental footprint without compromising stretch or performance. The 45% recycled polyester / 45% polyester / 10% elastane blend is purpose-built for saltwater performance: it resists fade, holds its shape after repeated exposure, and maintains the four-way stretch that the variable jacquard construction relies on.

Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the outseam length of the Hyperfreak Tech V?
- The Hyperfreak Tech V has a 20" outseam and a 9.5" inseam, placing the hem at the knee for a performance fit.
- What does O'Neill Hyperdry DWR mean?
- Hyperdry DWR (Durable Water Repellent) is O'Neill's water-repellency finish. It causes water to bead and roll off the fabric surface rather than soaking in, so the boardshort dries faster and feels lighter when you exit the water.
- What is variable stretch jacquard fabric?
- Variable stretch jacquard is a woven-knit hybrid construction that places zones of higher elasticity where the body needs the most range of motion -- through the seat, hips, and thighs. Unlike uniform stretch fabrics, it balances support and flexibility across different panels of the short.
- Why does the Hyperfreak Tech V use welded seams instead of stitched seams?
- Welded seams bond fabric layers with heat and pressure rather than thread. The result is a flatter seam with no thread to absorb water, less chafe against skin or a wetsuit, and a lighter overall construction. The welded zip pocket and angled eyelets follow the same principle.
- Is the Hyperfreak Tech V made with recycled materials?
- Yes. The fabric is 45% recycled polyester, 45% polyester, and 10% elastane. The recycled polyester component reduces the environmental impact of the short without affecting its stretch or saltwater durability.
- Can I wear the Hyperfreak Tech V under a wetsuit?
- Yes. The fixed waist, flat welded seams, and low-profile drawcord are all designed to sit cleanly under a wetsuit without bunching or creating pressure points.
- Where can I buy the O'Neill Hyperfreak Tech V boardshort?
- The Hyperfreak Tech V is available in store and online at Island Water Sports in South Florida. Call 954-427-4929 for in-store inquiries.
